3 people are killed every day in Metro

FOUR persons die violently every day in Calabarzon, while three meet the same fate in Metro Manila.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon, which make up Calabarzon, recorded 1,352 killings in 2004 and 1,290 in 2005. From January to June this year, 641 cases of homicide and murder have been recorded.
The figures mean that an average of four persons meet violent deaths daily in that region every six hours.
In Metro Manila the number of homicide or murder cases was 902 in 2004, 958 in 2005, and 513 in the first half of the current year. The figure translates to an average of three people killed every eight hours.
A comparison of statistics reveals an upward trend in homicide or murder cases in Metro Manila, with 425 in the first half last year compared with 466 in the same period this year.
Calabazon consistently posted the most number of violent deaths, but there was a slight downward trend. The figures for the five provinces in the same semi-annual period were 669 in 2004, 651 in 2005 and 641 this year.
The Cordillera Autonomous Region has steadily posted the lowest number of violent deaths since 2000. Statistics reveals that in the first half of the year, 81 murder and homicide cases occurred in the region, which means a person is killed every other day there.
A noticeable rise was recorded in Southern Mindanao, a region composed of Compostela Valley, Davao, Davao del Sur, Davao City and Davao Oriental. From 334 murder or homicide cases in 2004, the number went up to 621 the following year.
For Metro Manila 2002 was the most violent year. A total of 1,244 homicides or murders were recorded that year.
No doubt, the spate of killings in Metro Manila that year, allegedly committed by a vigilante group known as F-5 started, contributed to the rise in the killings that year. Like its counterpart in Davao City, the Davao Death Squad, F-5 went after people perceived as recidivists.
It was also in 2002 that several high-profile personalities were assassinated in the national capital region, including Councilor Chika Go of the Third District of Manila and Police Supt. John Campos.
The killings continued the next year with the death of Mayor Guerrero Zaragoza of Tayug, Pangasinan; Assistant General Manager for Finance Lilia Diaz of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA); Mayor Joel Brillantes of Monkayo, Compostella Valley; and child actress Strawberry, whose real name was Anouk Baldo.
Nationwide, the most number of violent deaths occurred in 2002, with 10,910 people killed, a thousand more than in the previous year and 500 more than in 2003. The 2002 figure translates to 900 persons dying violently every month, 30 every day, or one to two every hour.
According to a legal practitioner, the police routinely charge suspects with murder instead of homicide, whatever are the circumstances of the killing. This accounts for the fact that most killings are recorded as murder cases.
