Often people do hear within 4 weeks or so, but don't worry if you don't as they do sometimes take longer.
Your next step after ILR is British Citizenship which you can apply for after you've been in the UK 3 years (which is usually 6 to 12 months after you get granted ILR). You don't currently have to apply for British Citizenship, but in my opinion it's definitely worth doing.

for a spouse visa..
you need to be in the uk 2years (- up to 28 days) and pass the life in uk test before you can apply for ILR, and after having ILR for 1 yr you can apply for citizenship.
if you cannot apply for ILR because your visa will expire b4 you have been in the uk 2yrs (- up to 28 days) or you cannot pass the life in uk test in time, then you will probably have to apply for FLR, which might last til you have been in the uk 2yrs or for up to 2yrs if you could pass the life in uk test :doh

like what joeblogs says ross, when your granted or your wife with spouse visa, she/he need to be in the uk for 2 years before the person with the visa can apply ILR needed to be within 28 days before your visa expire you have to apply FOR ILR, but..... you have to take the ''THE LIFE IN THE UK TEST'' first.:D before you do, its needed in the application and you better do it early a few months before you apply depends on you.
you have to apply ILR AND WHEN YOUR GRANTED YOU CAN APPLY FOR BRITISH CITIZENSHIP AFTER 3 YEARS SETTLING IN THE UK:BouncyHappy::)
