View Full Version : The reasoning behind bread that is sweet - Davao

Hi, having just returned from 6 weeks in Davao, I was living 5 mins walk from SM, there was one thing that really got my goat. I really, REALLY love my bread, in sandwiches, toast etc. however, filipino's are very used of their bread tasting sweet. To me a ham sandwich or anything like cheese, with something sweet, made me seriously consider being sick. I found out the reason why all their 'savoury' stuff is sweet, even the diabetic bread!!! It's because all the mis-shaped bananas are ground up and make up the flour as well as wheat!!! I literally tried every type of bread SM sold, and I still couldn't find some that tasted like UK bread, so if anyone knows a well known brand i can buy easily on Mindanao, it would be most appreciated.
I had to laugh mind, i had breakfast at Jollibee one morning, I went for the sausage burger with egg and cheese, can you guess what they served it with??? A sweet waffle!!! (as the bun) It was hideous, when I asked them if they had made a mistake, they simply said they always cooked them like that!!! The amount of sweet in all the filipinos foods must certainly be linked to the high amount of diabetics in the country. I'm a savoury guy, but I really missed my bread :( That aside the food was fantastic, just having a hard time paying UK prices again now!!!

I leant the trick on the second day in Cebu....
We used to buy baguettes from the bakery franchise in SM.... Nice and savoury....:xxgrinning--00xx3:
The only problem was that after a day or two the Mrs didn't like chucking the stale stuff out. ...:NoNo:
It took some convincing but in the end she saw sense, and I didn't mind going to SM every couple of days for fresh supplies, even if it turned out to be a major shopping trip every time.....:doh
Since she has been here, she has kind of weaned off the sugary stuff, she seldom eat chocolate or sweets but the fresh fruit bill has mushroomed out into space and beyond.....:icon_lol:

yes, I think finding a good baker is a priority! The fresh fruit was amazing as was the fresh fish, bah I miss Davao :( Let's not mention the sm light at 30 pesos or the smokes at 40 pesos.. the UK really is TOO expensive! Oh, and the miserable people, not hard to see why I should be the proud owner of a luxury apartment by about February :D
DON'T GO TO MINDANAO!! YOU'LL BE BOMBED, SHOT, OR KIDNAPPED!!! I hope it stays with these scaremonger tactics, means the place won't turn into tenerife, awash with casinos and westerners! Anyways, Second half beckons for the pool against PSV, bet the boss is watching :D

I'm afraid it's not working! :(
On my first visit to Tagum (only 19 months ago), I didn't see a single westerner for the 9 days between leaving Davao airport, and returning.
Yesterday, I saw three westerners in the space of 30 minutes in Tagum NCCC mall.

I could have had those.
But opted instead for the recognisable and trusted imported "Marlboro lights".
