I was asked by a friend in the Philippines recently how many Filipinas are living in the UK and I had no idea. I guessed at about 500 but it may be many more than I think.
Does anyone have a reasonably accurate estimate for this information? If not, could you point me towards an authoritative source of information which I can look up.
Many thanks,
John

Not sure when this census was performed but it suggests that 200,000 Filipinos living in the UK were born in the Philippines. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filipino_British
* London - Over 120,000 ethnic Filipinos regardless of birthplace[5]
o Earl's Court - Single largest Filipino community in the UK
* Cambridge - Between 3,000 and 5,000, largest community for a small city[6]
* Barrow-in-Furness - 1,000 in urban area, largest community for a large town[7]
* Bristol
* Liverpool
* Manchester
* Birmingham
* Leeds
* Slough

You only need to go to one of the festivals in the summer to realise that there are far more than 500. No idea of the real number but 200,000 sounds reasonable to me.

What Festivals are you referring to? Perhaps I need to visit one or more of them. :)

The main one seems to be the Barrio festival, which is held in Hounslow in July. There are others, though not sure if there are any closer to you.
BTW were you talking about filipinas (female) or filipinos (male + female)?

Profile of the Filipino Community in the UK
There is a significant Filipino population in the United Kingdom. Over the past twenty years, the number of Filipinos living and working in the UK has increased by more than 833% from roughly 18,000 in 1986 to more than 150,000 in 2006. Of thin number, about 70% live in Greater London area.
The Filipino community works in a variety of sectors, ranging from IT, aviation, education, hospitality sector (hotels, restaurants and casinos) and healthcare, chefs, and house managers. Increasingly, Filipino engineers and information technology experts have been recruited to the UK in significant numbers. Over the past five years, about a hundred of these engineers have been working in the aeronautical and avionics companies in the servicing and maintenance departments while others have been working for railway companies.
Since 2001, several dozen IT experts have been working with British telecommunication companies such as Vodafone, T-Mobile, and Orange in software development, as well as with computer companies working on e-commerce solutions.
Perhaps the Filipino community is best known for the contribution it makes to the healthcare sector. Filipino nurses are consistently recognized for their high standards of professionalism. In the past six years, more than 20,000 Filipinos were recruited into the health service, most of whom are nurse serving in the National Health Service while the remainder are working in the independent healthcare sector – mostly private nursing homes.
A survey conducted amongst a limited sample of Filipinos (British-Filipinos) yielded some interesting findings:
65% of Filipinos are nurses and/or in the allied medical fields
Less than 10% are in domestic service
A growing number of entrepreneurs of about 5%
10-20% are second-generation youths, many of whom are finishing university courses
To date, there are about 100 Filipino community associations/charities in the UK that are registered with the Philippine Embassy. There are four widely circulated community newspapers: Filipino International, Philippine Express International, Filipino Observer and Planet Philippines. A more recent addition is Euro Filipino Journal.

yes near 200,000 cannot be far out, also you have students here (nvq's ), those on workpermits and their dependants (adults and children), so it must be well over 200,000.

Thank you all for this information. I am sorry that I did not formulate my original question carefully enough.
My question was intended to refer to the number of Filipinas (female) who came to settle permanently the UK, whether through marriage or for some other reason. I was not including those who come to study or work and then go back home. Is it possible to identify the approximate number in this category?

Thank you pennybarry for this comprehensive information.
I appreciate what you say about Filipina nurses. My mother was looked after by a Filipina nurse before she died two years ago and she could not have had better care. Perhaps we should make it easier for such valuable workers to come to the UK.
