Are British Being Tax..

Are British being taxed by the UK government even if you live and work outside the UK? Like if you have a property in the Philippines or anywhere in the world, does UK tax you for these? I saw it in another forum, this guy is giving his opinion about being careful in taking BC because even if he works anywhere in the world, UK will tax him for all his overseas properties. I don't believe it as it will be double taxing, the host country and the UK.

it depends on the country if they have double taxation arrangements or not. When I lived in HK for example my earnings are only taxed there but I would pay tax on property in the UK. I did not pay tax on our Philippines property in the UK but to BIR in Phils.

It depends on where you spend most of your time. I'm looking into this at the moment as I work offshore and the UK gov has now decided to tax me even though I only spend 5 and a half months in the uk. This means a massive tax bill in january that I can't possibly budjet for, sob. I own a UK property I should mention.

I'm paid from a foreign country so as long as the uk and that counrty have an argeement you can't get taxed twice on the same amount. You pay tax in the country you work, declare this on your tax return and the gov will tax you on the rest. ie I work in Egypt so I pay 10% tax there then the Uk will tax me on the rest. Check out the hmrc website.

The other way to go (the way I'm looking at) is to go total expat. CHange your mortgage to buy to let, if you still can these days rent your house and leave the uk. You then can not come back to the uk for 12 months. After that you're allowed 90 days / year there after. This all hinges on you not having a property you can come back to, hence the need to rent out your house.
