learning tagalog....

how many husband or wives r trying to learn tagalog.....i am trying....it is a little difficult....but i think it is better that me and my asawa can speak together in each others language....i have had a few podcasts to help...and of course being in philippines helps a lot....are all u guys trying to learn too?...

anyone know any other good ways of learning?...websites...cds..anything at all will help me...thankzz

Get yourself some good books,constantly refer to them,spend time in the Philippines with pinoys,not in Hotels but in homes interacting(best way is a home-stay),and if your wife is pinay ask her to speak to you in nothing but philippino for one day a week,most brit guys are lazy,they can say half a dozen words and think they are fluent,they aint :icon_lol:It sounds odd when they stick a random pinoy word in an english sentence :NoNo:I have a friend in Scotland who speaks perfect visayan,I was in a travel agents in Cebu with him,their jaws dropped when he booked our tickets flawlessly,he lived there for two years and learnt it to a "T" including some pretty impressive slang :icon_lol:

Belfast dude, I think that's great you're learning. It is so important when marrying a women who speak another language to be able to speak each others.

I've begun learning Tagalog with Pimsleur. It's hard, but being able to sepak "In the Language of her Heart" for my girlfriend is so important, and nice for her I think.

Learning Tagalog means I will be able to communicate with her parents and other family members. It also means that if/when we have children, brining them up speaking both English and Tagalog from birth is easier, and better for everybody, including her family in Philippines.

Learning a foreign wife's language is a very important, often forgotten, step to take.

I'm a relative "newbie" to this site so I've only just read this thread. I am learning tagalog and it's definitely appreciated. For a start there's YouTube "Eshey vblog tagalog" ; she's amateur but cute and somehow makes it easy to learn the basics. There is also magtagalog.com with common phrases (written by my namesake Alan). I can now understand at least the titles of Aegis Band greatest hits !

He sure can,but even I can do that,the first words most people learn in a foreign land are often the rude ones,in the old days of the Raj or when white men were carving up africa between themselves the guys often had local women as concubines,they used to call them sleeping dictionaries as they learnt the local language from the women.Ask your wife to speak nothing but visayan for an hour a day Arthur,try to learn a few new words each evening,it all starts to click together like a jigsaw puzzle.Saying that you really have to want to learn,I spent almost 5 years in Hong Kong and should have put the time to good use learning Cantonese but had no interest in it so never got past the rude words and suchlike :rolleyes:
