View Full Version : Alec Baldwin’s Joke on Filipina Mail Order Bride CAUSES UPROAR!

JUST AN OLD NOTE I POSTED ON MY FB AROUND JULY...
I AM FILIPINA AND PROUD OF IT!:smileybigtmouth::smileybigtmouth::smileybigtmouth:
In my Literature class we were asked to read our handouts about filipino women...I was actually reading The Filipino women by Carmen Guerrero Nakpil,a very powerful essay indeed..A s i was surfing the net i saw this vid in utube,an interview with the famous actor Alec Baldwin...And i felt i had to step up and make a CLEAR POINT!Im not mad or anything cz for me WE ARE THE ONES WHO DICTATES OUR OWN REPUTATION.But i dnt blame these filipina women in the said sites,i blame the CORRUPT GOVERNMENT!:furious3::smileybigangry:
Alec Baldwin’s joke about getting a Filipino mail-order bride provoked a sharp response in the Philippines, with one senator saying that the “30 Rock” star faces violence if he ever visits.
Baldwin, 51, who is divorced with a teenage daughter, said in a May 12 interview on “The Late Show” with David Letterman that he would love to have more children.
The Emmy-winning actor quipped that he was “thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point … or a Russian one.”
MY POINT!
Okay, Alec Baldwin is probably not aware that we have a law banning Mail Order Marriages that facilitating or arranging a marriage between a Filipina and a foreigner has been prohibited under Republic Act 6955 or the Anti-Mail-Order Bride Law of 1990. The law “declare(s) as unlawful the practice of matching Filipino women for marriage to foreign nationals on a mail order basis and other similar practices, including the advertisement, publication, printing or distribution of brochures, fliers, and other propaganda materials in furtherance thereof and providing penalty therefore.”
Joking about mail-order brides... is trivializing human smuggling, NOT A GOOD JOKE!
SO What makes me proud to be a Filipino? That I know how to value things that need to be valued… being Pinoy enables me to respect people without looking down on their heritage.Filipinos are a tough breed. We can go through crises that would have Western societies at a standstill and still meet each other for coffee the next day.Filipina women especially, one of her good qualities=her unquenchable optimism...and Because I love passionately, and I think that comes from being Filipino.
The thing is, Alec Baldwin is not alone in stereotyping Filipinas . The Filipina has been stereotyped as “mail order brides” for so long . An information campaign should consistently be disseminated. The government must implement the law prohibiting the violation of Filipino women, and should look after distressed Filipinas who have suffered abuses in the hands of foreign spouses.

We can go through crises that would have Western societies at a standstill and still meet each other for coffee the next day.
What Western societies are brought to a standstill through the minor crisis that happen in Philippines?
You should be shouting from the rooftops about how :censored: your government handled this. At the present time you have a major crisis, and you HAVE been brought to a standstill, because no helicopters, lack of sewerage , lack of manpower for rescue from the military or emergency services.
Your president was caught cheating, and you still have her in power.

Can you explain to me, why you haven't booted her ass out yet? Or are you still drinking coffee?

I disagree with Queenie. I think that this is a very very valid point in the context of "pinoy pride" etc.
Look, everywhere I go, every day when I leave the house I hear a constant chorus of "Amerikano" and "Hey Joe", and "Hoy Foreigner", "Amerikano, give me money now". Now, this can very easily be construed as racist. They see a white person and you automatically assume I am
a) American (coz no white people ever came from Europe, gago)
b) Rich (coz all whiteys have a money tree)
c) Should help your situation (I am not responsible for other's kids)
d) Is entitled to pay a higher price for goods and services.
I say all that to say this: I am constantly given racist treatment here in the Philippines because I am a minority - a white man, a puti an alleged Amerikano.
I don't take that nicely, given the implications of how it would be were the roles reversed and Filipinos were on the receiving end.
I mean, Filipinas on here who live in the UK, if an english person says to your husband - in your presence - "Does your chinese bride speak english?", you'd be offended, but here in the Philippines, I'm supposed to be all understanding like a dog rolling over? :ARsurrender:
I know this is a bit of a rant, but Filipinos are racists too.
They'll laugh at TV jokes about chinese (they call them "spitting chinese") and Koreans, and Americans, but when Desperate Housewives, or Alec Baldwin make any kind of statement in JEST, it's considered an outrage.
The Philippines is full of double standards, yet, in my very humble opinion, many of the derisory comments are earned (not that it makes it right).
Anyhow, I hope you all can make some sense out of that :)

It's different though, because I'm talking very broadly about the national perception.
I mean, in the UK, most regular working class people will think of Filipinos as "Hardworking, faithful, educated, caring (as in nurses lol).
The flipside is here in the Philippines, most regular working class people see foreigners as
- Cash Cows
- Abnormally Big Bodied
- Suckers
- Assume they're americans.
The point I'm trying to make is, here in Philippines, those small minded, racist stereotypes are held by the majority of the ordinary people, with an elite few who think in a non prejudicial way.
Whereas in the UK, where we're socialised to value multiculturalism, the small minded, racist community are very very fringe, and not mainstream at all.
That's my 2 peso's worth.

Of course you would, it's home for you! Just like the greenday song "A wasteland I call my home - welcome to paradise"
as for visiting the bad parts, QB, are you crazy? I am talking about the "middle class" subdivision I live in where everyone's an attorney or doctor, and the whole city I live in.
I have been living here in negros oriental for a year now, I'm entitled to the opinion that I have because it's my experience.
Lets not have an argument here.
All I'll say is : mail order brides dont exist, but they do. Just in a legal form to pacify those powers that be.
Chinese like to spit. Great. Some Filipinas or Russians will marry any man who's willing to crack open his visa card and take them from being in poverty, or as the illonggos say "eating grass".
So why was Alec wrong in what he said? He was just going on the knowledge that he had.
I was outraged the first time I saw that clip too, then I realised my own logical shortcomings in that area.

This is the statement of Ms Loren Legarda.
STATEMENT
Senator Loren Legarda
Re: Alec Baldwin's Mail Order Bride Remark
18 May 2009
Mr. President and my honorable colleagues: Yet again the Filipina has been a subject of ridicule by a foreigner. In the David Letterman Show aired last Thursday, May 14, Hollywoord actor Alec Baldwin said:
"I'd love to have more kids. I think about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point or a Russian one. I don't care, I'm 51."
This statement, Mr. President, is nothing short of a cultural insensitivity. There have been several instances in the past when the Filipina has been degraded in international media. There was Teri Hatcher in Desperate Housewives saying she wanted to make sure she would not be attended by a doctor who attended a medical school in the Philippines. Then there was the BBC program Harry and Paul portraying a Filipina maid in undignified and laughable postures. Then this statement by Mr. Baldwin. To let this pass by without a sound of protest is the height of insensitivity and callousness on our part, Filipino leaders. So I vigorously register my objection to the statement by Mr. Baldwin.
Mr. Baldwin is know for being thoughtless about what he says. Nevertheless, his words are classifiable as "hate speech."
These incidents in the international media show a pattern of hatred directed against an identifiable group: the Filipinos. In the latter two incidents, another pattern of degradation may be observed: insult against the Filipino woman. By making the remark, Mr. Baldwin hurled two insults: one against the Filipino race and the other, against the female.
Mr. President and my honorable colleagues, incidents of mockery against our race happen again and again, again and again we must not fail in our strong condemnation and resounding assertion of our diginity.
Let us make it clear to the world: Filipino women are not for sale.
Not for sale even to Hollywood actors.
Thank you, Mr. President

Besides, we don't need to tell the world filipinas are not for sale. We need to tell the Filipinas that they're not for sale, then the world will follow suit. The reason why the mail order bride perception is intact is because there are many girls who marry for money and not much else.
Besides, no-one cares in Ireland if he says something about Irish being drunkards.
The way the Filipinos have reacted to this and Desperate Houswives has made them even more a laughing stock.

and they all get hit up for money ;)
look QB, I've been to manila and cebu many times. I get treated like a stoopid rich sucker everytime. Hell, even my wife who's bisaya gets inflated prices coz she's not local. That's a way to improve the perception of the place, right? :cwm23: Been to Cebu and Manila, many times . . . Don't like dem, but don't write off the million people who are here in Negros! :doh:doh Besides, there are more people in total living in Provinces than in the cities, it's just that people in Manila and Cebu think the whole country is those two cities!!:Erm::doh:Rasp:
The point I make is, In This Country, For a Filipino - it's perfectly acceptable here to say and do anything to a foreigner, to charge puti prices, long nose tax, but the first moment someone says something not nice about a Filipino, it's WAR! :doh:Brick:
Ignorant double standards :bigcry::Brick::Help1:
I dont like Manila by the ay and Cebu is a more laid back type of province...

A new craze has enveloped the welsh its called wellie testing. the only requirements are wellies and a good looking sheep the rest is self evident, don't all Welsh people look the same only the sheep are different.Hence the old Welsh saying,"don't look to sheepishly boyo, feel the quality not the width".
A proud website-Sheep poo paper-only in wales! (http://www.creativepaperwales.co.uk/)
As for the alledged 'hanky-panky', can you English people explain why it is that in the winter, the sheep are happy and relaxed, but as soon as the annual influx of English tourists begins they get decidedly nervous? The Welsh are being unfairly blamed for the antics of English sex-tourists.
No matter, we're used to it.
