Wolves officials are fuming at being called to account for something they believe bigger clubs have got away with for years.

Their written response to the Premier League will highlight specific examples involving United and ask why Ferguson was not asked to explain.

They will cite United’s final league game of last season at Hull, when Ferguson also made 10 changes from the previous match, even though his opponents were involved in a relegation battle.

Ferguson was more concerned about keeping his best players fresh for the Champions League final three days later.

In 2007, Ferguson fielded a weakened team at home to West Ham, whose 1-0 victory at Old Trafford helped them pull off a dramatic escape from relegation.
