Now I eat a lot of turkeys a year, but lately the new Xmas batch has been just short of sad. We all know they add water to the birds to pump them up (reminds me of the old days in Liverpool :Erm:), the latest Bernard Matthews ones are a farce.

4.4Kg bought - 2.6kg cooked :omg: , and a lot less meat than I've been used to for that size.

For a long time I have been buying poultry from Lidl.

The meat doesn't appear to be pumped with water, or not as much, as very little of it, or none at all, gets in the roasting tin.

Organic free range birds always work out cheaper in the end.

The Wife found local butchers often the best but found supermarket frozen chicken far taster than chicken (we dont buy that many turkeys) from most supermarkets. The taste of the prepacked "fresh" chicken is so chemically altered to last longer (im guessing) but only noticeable once you start eating freshly prepared or strangely frozen chicken.

A place I eat at serves "Beer Butt Chicken" and will be doing a turkey variation for Christmas. The chef opens a can of beer, inserts it in the chicken / turkey and then stands it upright to roast. The moisture and flavour of the beer soak into the meat and you end up with a really tasty, moist chicken / turkey. Much better than tasting chemical alterations :xxgrinning--00xx3:
