Customs charges in the Philippines...... I think it depends who the local postie is and as far as I can tell they just think of a figure, double it and add a couple of 0's onto the end. I'm sure South East Boy will be able to give you a better idea because I believe he got badly stung by them quite recently.

Hiya.

Can you not take it personally on your next visit??
I wd not trust any kind of shipping with an item like that!!

If you can, get DHL to mark the package 'GIFT ONLY NO COMMERCIAL VALUE'
in order to stop it attracting duty!

Hope this helps

Fedex/DHL, I wouldn't use any other service for an item of that value.

The best way. I've just taken my g/f my old laptop, MP3 player and mobile phone. I wasn't going to trust any postman or courier to look after them properly, far better they were packed nice and safe in my case.

Hello guys

Thank you all for your replies,,

I cant wait till i go visit again to bring this laptop because i dont think i will be able to visit anytime this year or next (maybe not even the year after that heheh), so maybe i will just leave it for now as i'm not willing to take a risk..

If you did do it, you might want to check the prohibited items list, as some items you can't send and some won't be insured if it's damaged or lost. As the receiver of my parcel could not afford to pay the 6000 pesos customs/VAT charges (I put the value of the items at £240, but it was actually about £300), I had to pay, then I had to pay another charge as the courier company paid first, then took the charges from my card. Before you send any items, you have to agree that you will pay the charges if the recipient can't or won't.

Here's the link to my thread about courier costs etc, where I have also written their breakdown of how they costed the charges:http://filipinaroses.com/showthread.php?t=20825

Well, as I said, I marked it at £240 and they didn't open it as far as I know, so I think they took it as being £240 value and it was 6000 pesos on £240! Different items have different rates of charges.

That's not good about your last Balikbayan box being lost at sea. :NoNo: I hope that it was the truth and it wasn't stolen. Do you know of anyone else in Scotland that has sent one by another company?

We sent one about 3 years ago and just wrapped it up in blankets in the midst of our balakbayan box. No customs fees incurred

My bloke purchased 2 ACER laptops and sent the other one to me thru DHL he declared it as a gift and so we didnt pay that much.. but the problem is the lappy only functioned for just a month waaaa :bigcry:(must be the careless handling in courier)...good thing hubby comes back and visit me so we swapped and bring the poor busted lappy back to uk...
so i suggest,, bring it with u on your next visit or let your family buy their lappy here in PH..less hassle ..less worry
