Mad as a hatter ! :doh (the expression came from mercury poisoning due to compounds used in making hats 2 to 3 centuries ago)
It's actually the most toxic metal on THIS planet after plutonium :omg:
It affects every system in the body but poisoning's uncommon now and should be minimised as more countries (including European Union) eventually ban it:xxgrinning--00xx3:

:cwm24: REALLY, Alan? ... I hadn't realised that! :NoNo: I mean, I was aware of its extremely high level of toxicity ... but never knew it had been used in hat-making. It just goes to show that ... even at MY late stage in life ... I'm still learning new things, thanks to people like your goodself! :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Continuing on this theme ... that's just one example of the benefits of a forum such as ours; it's much more than simply a 'helpline' - it's an EDUCATION in itself - a learning curve in which we can ALL share ... picking up innumerable snippets of useful information as we go along!!! :xxgrinning--00xx3:

To be fair, I've given the most likely of a few explanations of the expression "Mad as a hatter":xxgrinning--00xx3: Not one that's used much these days :NoNo: But reading some threads can lead to sudden changes of mood - that's mercurial !:omg:

Here's ANOTHER use of *it: One of my colleagues in Social Services was wont to quote the expression in deference to our boss, the Principal Social Worker at H.M. Prison, Perth ... back in the 1970s, admittedly. Maybe he just said it as "a matter of principle"! :icon_lol:

A bullet is fairly toxic!

What ?:omg:
Toxic means poisonous. A poison is a substance that causes illness or death to a person or animal that swallows or absorbs it.

They would die from internal haemorrhage due to rupture of the heart muscle by the bullet, not poisoning !:omg:
Yes, I realised you were "messin" , I know nothing about football :NoNo: Correct use of language was essential in my career - imagine for example if my report on a sample had said "evidence of cancer" when I meant "no evidence ...":omg:
But, keeping to the thread, I never diagnosed a case of mercury poisoning in 35 years , either in the UK or Far East :NoNo:

OMG :omg: you really are "messin" now and also going off - topic !:D
Lead poisoning usually takes years ! A bullet would kill from internal bleeding in minutes ! I'm only stating the bleeding obvious !:doh
