No-one doubts the London town is the first city, but Brum the second city? Don't make me laugh! Has it got a motorway ring road? No. Has Manchester? Yes. Has it got a major international airport? No. Has Manchester? Yes. Has it got a tram/light rail system? No. Has Manchester? Yes. Has it got two of the richest football clubs in the world? No. Has Manchester? Yes. Has it recently hosted the Commonwealth Games? No. Has Manchester? Yes. I rest my case.

The first official capital was Malmesbury, and this later changed to Winchester. London City is now the capital ... not London :xxgrinning--00xx3:. So if you only live in London, you are not officially in the capital.

:gp: ... actually, I believe the UK Capital's *official title is the 'City of Westminster'; the rest ... comprising the numerous Boroughs ... comes under Greater London. But then, I'm a lowly Scot ... so what do I know?

To settle the argument about the United Kingdom's *largest cities ... in terms of population, that is ... here are the 'Top Ten' in order of precedence:

1, London
2, Birmingham
3, Manchester
4, Liverpool
5, Glasgow ... yehey! :Kilt:
6, Sheffield
7, Nottingham
8, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
9, Bristol
10, Leeds

*Based in accordance with statistical data published in Gt. Britain in 2004 by Philip's World Traveller's Atlas.

Manchester has got its own spaghetti junction in the north-west, where the M61, the M60 (eight lanes wide) and the A580 meet. Also, it doesn't go BRRRDUMP, BRRRDUMP, BRRRDUMP when you drive along it, and being on the ground, it's in no danger of falling down like the Birmingham one. As for crap areas and mega-posh areas ( Bowden, Wilmslow, Hale etc, highest house prices outside London), Manchester has no shortage of either.

I will be a bit more serious folks, and not just **** off Bimingham for no reason. I lived in Manchester from my early teens (1973) until 1989, and fair enough, at that time there was no big difference between the two cities. What has happened is more recent. When the economy was doing well, between 1996 and the start of the present slump in 2007, people in the computer and media industries found London office space too expensive and began looking further away. The blunt truth is that converted cotton mills make more pleasant offices than converted steel works (Manchester was built on cotton and Birmingham on steel). Nearly a third of the BBC is now in Manchester. Besides this, there is the money from the football clubs (including Liverpool), and the fact that Manchester has spent on infrastructure (the airport and the Metrolink system). Another factor is that Birmingham is much nearer to London; people with money travel there anyway at the weekend, rather than spend their money in Brum. Deansgate and the area around it have a very London-like atmosphere, and south and south-west Manchester and the part of Cheshire next to it are mega-wealthy. If you don't believe me, travel there and have a look for yourself. I often wish that I hadn't moved away from the area. In many ways it is brash new money, but it is impressive. It's just a statement of fact, Birmingham is ahead on population only, and that may well change in the future.

The city of London is not where either houses of parliment, whitehall or Buckingham palace and as you say its the City of Westminster where all the "power" is.

BUt then saying that many of the money makers and the Bank of England are in the City of London who some would say hold the real power..
