The pain comes from the muscles surrounding the problem....1hr in a hot bath will relax them and ease the pain, but she's best getting real medicine from the doctors .... Zydol is what I use along with a lot of other stuff. Has she tried Ibuprofen? Although for me I may as well be taking sheep poop for all the use it is. However Ibuleve Spray should be pretty useful for the area, as it works on my elbows when they are on fire , but not anywhere else :Erm:

Hello Wheela,
My late first wife suffered from inflamatory Rheumatoid Arthritis for most of our married life ... having first been diagnosed with the condition in 1967 at the age of twenty-seven. Thankfully, the disease was - for the most part - kept at bay, with a concoction of steroid drugs ... but not without considerable detrimental effect on her general health.
However, treatment has improved dramatically in the intervening decades, and I know of many other [young] people who are able to carry on with a relatively normal life - despite developing RA.
 But it would seem that your mother's symptoms are more inclined to be mainly muscular - rather than arthritic - in which case, Keith's suggestions would be more appropriate. Most folk DO tend to become aware of aches and pains, cramps, &c. in (notably) their leg muscles, as they age. In other cases, it's the joints that are affected. I'm afflicted with both to some extent, and certainly find *Ibuprofen (which is relatively inexpensive) helpful. Even Myrna - who's 14 years younger than me - finds her joints and muscles (particularly in her right hand) seizing up at times, and resorts to the *same measures.
Best of all, though, your mum really should consult her GP (as Keith has recommended) in order to get to the real root of the trouble - although perhaps Doc Alan (Alan Jackson) would be able to advise, if you were to PM him.

I have had Ankylosing spondylitis which is inflammatory arthritis, which was diagnosed in 1961 when I was 21 years old.
I have taken anti-inflammatory medicine ever since. The medication is pretty good and I have been lucky.
I started running (around 3 miles) about 3 or 4 times a weeks when I was 33 (I am 70 now). I did the first two London Marathons( 1981 and 82).
The first thing you need to do is get a diagnosis of exactly what type of arthritis your mother has. Arthritis a word which covers is a wide range.
Then do some research on the internet. It should be possible to buy a generic medication, probably much cheaper than a brand name, but chemically the same.
I know some people swear by herbal / alternative etc medicine (some even think the world is flat) but for my part, I have no faith that they work in general. So my advice is don't waste your money on them. I am fairly sure you should be able to buy the generic medication in Phil, cheaper that in the West and then adding transportation costs.
I suggest first you

My mum has it, as did her mother before her. My mum recommends staying away from tomatoes and potatoes and taking cod liver oil daily.

She probably won't need that if she eats plenty of fish, but extra won't do any harm as it's need to the brain, hence I drink a gallon of it a day :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Sorry I've been offline until now, but the advice you've already been given is good and I agree with Keith and Arthur about your Mum seeing her doctor.

I have found glucosamine sulphate has (pretty sure its not coincidence or placebo) has help with pain in joints.
As I said above I started running to keep fit when I was 33. About 5 years ago I was getting discomfort in my knee and hips when I ran. Since taking taking glucoamine daily I am free of pain.
There are many recommendations for glucosamin on the web from well-know sports personalities, which are probably not inspired by financial reward as they do not recommend any particular brand.
I don't suggest this is a cure or treatment for arthritis etc.

Any progress with your Mum ? I really couldn't add to John's advice because "arthritis" (inflamed joints) can be acute (short-lived), chronic (long-lasting), and affect one or more joints with many different causes.
