View Full Version : Should Smoking Be Banned in Private Cars?

Well the human rights fools will say yes, it's their car they can do what they want, but what about the rights of non-smokers in the car, we know passive smoking can kill, and vehicles are small enclosed areas. But more importantly is it not a safety issue when they are driving? If anyone can find any research on this publish it here please. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

I remember my step-father making me inhale his second hand smoke, when I was 10 years old. If I opened the window, he would tell me to close it, or if I complained he'd tell me to shut up. So yeah, I'm in favour of banning smoking in cars, but in the real world, it just wouldn't work. Making children inhale smoke in the same manner as happened to me would be regarded these days as child abuse, but back in the 70's, it was normal. I absolutely detest smokers; they are selfish as they risk the health of others. I have no sympathy when I see a crowd of smokers shivering in the rain outside a pub. If anything smoking should be confined to the privacy of your own house and banned from ALL public places.

No one can seriously doubt that passive smoking is a hazard to health, but Keith's question was actually whether smoking is a safety issue while driving :doh
Lighting up or holding a cigarette while driving is clearly a distraction, along with loud music, trying to read maps, inserting cassette or CD, tuning the radio, eating and drinking, or allowing the front seat passenger to perform certain acts on the driver :omg:
If any such distraction is coupled with bad driving it could lead to a charge of careless driving. If it leads to an accident, even death, then the charge will be dangerous driving. There is evidence that concentration is important in preventing accidents and common sense surely supports this. Whether lighting up and smoking is any worse than the other distractions mentioned is debatable.

Yes ... :iagree: in principle ... for the [obvious] reasons that others have already mentioned. But ...

... if a driver wishes to light-up when he/she is ALONE in his/her vehicle, then surely that is a matter of personal choice :anerikke: ... so long as he/she exercises due care and attention while doing so ... and, in the process, is not distracted to the extent of being a danger to other road users.

i think this thing is a matter of behavior, right manners and consideration to others..i hate it when i pass by people which is smoking coz the smell will stick thru your clothes no matter how u try to avoid it..i have friends and officemates who do smoke, but when we non-smokers are inside their car or even just near them, they are the ones who choose not to light a cigarette and smoke inside the car, or they try to get away as far as possible from us that we wont be able to inhale the nasty smoke from their cigs..they are the ones who feel embarrassed if they do so..

Oh ... c'mon, please ... BE realistic! [See Rob's #comment below]

but in the #real world, it just wouldn't work.

I absolutely *detest smokers; they are selfish as they risk the health of others.

:Erm: ... I think *that's being a bit harsh; I mean, selfishness can "cut BOTH ways" in this argument. Surely the fairest - and most sensible - solution would be to create separate Smoking & Non-Smoking Areas in pubs, clubs and the like. Whatever happened to individuals' rights to freedom of choice, for goodness sake?

Thank you Arthur!!! ...

If anything smoking should be confined to the privacy of your own house and banned from ALL public places. So you condone smoking in a private house but not in a private car?
I should think there's a whole lot of that going on now that so many UK pubs are closing their doors since the smoking ban! Cant be much good for the kids eh?

I have no idea why a man in his private work van/car cannot smoke!!..Just kick out the whining passenger and Bobs your uncle!! Whats the problem? Same with those cadging lifts from a driving smoker..If you dont like it,GO ON THE BUS? Jump on the train.. Is it that hard?
Got sick to death of nannying councillors, politicians, nozey neighbours and spy camera`s.Another reason why I left, hopefully NEVER to return.. (unless its to fly back and use the NHS)

I have no sympathy when I see a crowd of smokers shivering in the rain outside a pub.

I DO, I'm afraid! It's unfair, unsightly ... not to mention morally degrading ... and could SO easily be resolved if licensing authorities were given powers to provide separate facilities catering for smokers and non-smokers alike ... instead of EVERYONE being forced to pander to the dictates of Central Government bureaucracy in its attempts to create a 'Nanny State'. :doh

The problem is the non smokers demanding their rights to socialise with smokers!!!!
The ***** cant leave us alone!!!
If they dont like it why not just go back into the empty non smokers public bar and be smokeless alone?
Or stay at home where it is definitely safe from all kinds of nasty ailments.
Unfortunately the Government do not offer this alternative because of bar staff health issues..
Tell you what..Only employ smoking bar staff in a smokers bar and Non smoking staff in a non smokers bar and never the twain shall meet..
Whats was problem with that suggestion?

Thanks Arthur for keeping to the thread which was not primarily about the health hazards of smoking, active or passive (surely no longer debatable) , but whether there is evidence for the act of smoking while driving being a dangerous distraction :doh

If anything I think it makes you a safer driver, when you smoke they always seem to have a window open so more fresh air coming into the car preventing nodding off behind the wheel.
If you knock the tip of the ciggie off on the indicator stalk it really makes you alert while trying to avoid burning your nether regions.
Never seen an accident caused by smoking...all the other things, sat nav, radio tuning, mobile phones, sex, have.

GB was really great when we were a nation of smokers, when you was working you would have a smoke break and lots of work problems would be thought out and resolved. We were happier, you would just say to any problem,SOD IT lets go and have a smoke. Most of the great thinkers were pipe smokers.
The west has gone backwards since the drive against smoking, whereas the countries of lots of smokers,China etc , have thrived.

My wife smokes about 5 cigs a day but never in the car and I used to smoke 40 to 50 a day and stopped 23 years ago and now weigh 3 stone more. I know the health issues have been proved but :Erm: I still miss smoking. :D

Hi all,:Hellooo:

I know this is not sticking to the topic but just my view on smoking in general.

I was brought up in a smoking household, both mum and dad smoked and it just seemed normal.

I tried a cigarette when I first started work when I had my first wage packet, and did not like it and have never smoked since.
I have no objection to anyone smoking as long as it’s not around me!

My flat is a non smoking one that if anyone comes here they go outside to smoke, and it is the same with my car, if a passenger wants to smoke we stop and they get out.

Its a bit like our old building van on the way home from work. If anyone complained about the smoke we would simply pull over..to the nearest taxi rank, and let them out.:icon_lol:

By the time I got downstairs, it was a blazer!!

Due to health reasons, I have stopped smoking but cannot help missing it....

What Fred said happened to me once, a few years ago.

I was asked by my manager to give one of my colleagues a lift to one of the county shows downsouth, to save petrol money, ie expenses....:action-smiley-081:
After less than ten miles from leaving the office I lit up and was confronted by a barrage of abuse from my colleague, all along the passive smoking lark and trying to suffocate him and deny him his human rights, bla, blah, blah....:doh
So as the good samaritan I am, I went up the next exit on my route, which incidentally was junction 19 of the M6, southbound, and left him with his luggage by the side of the roundabout.:xxgrinning--00xx3:

I never had a rollicking about it and never been asked again to give lifts....:icon_lol:

The point of Keith's thread was whether there was research to show if there was a safety issue, resulting in careless or dangerous driving :doh

Then passive smoking was mentioned, then the safety issue,I don't smoke myself but have been in smokers cars and their driving was fine:xxgrinning--00xx3:

Les, I trust you and when I'm next in Harrogate ( a more affluent town than Scarborough :)) I will be happy to be driven in your smoke-free taxi (but with substantial discount as a forum member and retired doctor :xxgrinning--00xx3:).
I think we're all agreed the evidence is there that passive smoking is a health hazard. What really is more difficult to answer is whether there is also evidence for smoking as a safety issue while driving.

:iagree: ... on BOTH counts!! Indeed, I'VE known drivers who deliberately *chain-smoke [not that I'm advocating anyone follows *THIS practice!] behind the wheel ... in order to stay fully-alert during long, monotonous journeys. But, there again, NO ONE should be :drivingx: when overtired! :nono-1-1:

Well if eating a chocolate bar means you are not in full control of your Jam Jar then surely smoking is to?

Used to smoke but gave up as it bored me and couldn't see the point of it. Now we have mobiles no need to have a time wasting smoke when waiting around..

The Wife smokes a few a day and she goes to the blooming Kitchen to smoke as to cold outside even during the heatwave  I gotta say if i have to walk in just after she has smoked in the room i do find myself coughing.

We had a bit of a Central London Night club crawl last week and I have to say was nice to not stink of ash when we came out but some of the clubs have a right old whiff going on now sweat hair spray and over use of perfumes as do some pubs have some lovely stale beer smells etc..
So maybe they should bring it back:D

nothing worst then walking through the smokers standing just outside the doors to get to the bars, just like watching the patiants outside hospitals smoking tut, tut, tut must be hard if you have smoked a long time
