Does anyone has a clue how it is possible to send money to Phillipines from the UK ? I would be grateful if you can give a piece of advice.

There's plenty of advice on these forums re the costs and mechanics of sending £'s to PI (just do a bit of searching) but remember Rule 1 - Don't send money to someone you haven't met

one of the easy ways is western union but there are lots of other ways too just shop around , could you send some to me :icon_lol:

It depends how much you want to send and how regularly. If you are only sending £30 or £40 then Western Union are your easiest option. They'll charge you £4.90 (if the amount is under £50), and skim a few peso's off the official exchange rate, but the money will be ready to collect in the P.I's in about 15 minutes.
If you want to send a large amount, ie, thousands or a regular monthly amount, you'd be better looking at the specialist currency /FX brokers (not your bank or local Travelex). The FX dealers all work slightly differently, some may charge you a small fee per transaction, whilst others may charge you a one off setting up/membership fee. You usually get the best rate of exchange from one of these companies as they only take a minimal skim from the official rate and are sometimes up for a bit of negotiation.
I'm happy to recommend these people, http://www.baydonhillfx.com/ I've been using them for about 5 years on various overseas property transactions and have so far been very happy with the service.
As already stated - Don't send money to a girl you haven't met yet, there are lot's of scammers out there preying on the generosity and sympathies of rich and gullable westerners. Some of the sob stories are very convincing, but don't be taken in.

Use the search, there are lots of threads on sending money. Personally, I use PNB Europe and have an account in my town in Phils and transfer in seconds. Each to their own.
But like has already been stated, use caution, be sure you know who you are sending to, why you are sending it, and proof it is being used for the requested purpose. As Englishman said there are people quite happy to prey on rich, and like me poor westerners!!

Thanks for this info, however, with the collapse recently of one such company, I have tried to check out what insurance guarantee the company have. There is none shown on the web site.
I have emailed them asking that question and also what the total charges are for a transfer. I will report back.

I wouldn't wait up for an answer - they sound like a bunch of shysters operating from an ansaphone and accomodation address. Their Mickey Mouse website shows their e mail contacts as

We use iremit.
The exchange rates are very good.
Service charge OK
Normally we just take cash to Barclays bank and make the deposit, iremit receive immediately (also Barclays). Then phone to iremit to inform them where to transfer the Peso. Next day it's there.
They also do internet transfers, but I've never done it

I started using Orbitremit.com to send money to the Philippines to pay for the wedding. only £7 service charge each transaction and get a much better rate than every bank. Also you can send to the person or to the Bank account.
Its a nightmare to set up though sending a scanned copy of your passport saying it is certified true by someone of authority. This is for security checks.
If whoever is picking up has a bank account, then bank to bank is better but as i found out not all people do. kind of taken for granted of that here in the UK.

You can use different remittance company in UK, charges are much cheaper than sending it by SWIFT or IBAN...There's PNB in UK, I've been using PNB for years now, you can send by dropping by 'n their branches / by phone or by online..and if your beneficiaries have PNB accounts your money will be transfered 'n seconds.

Just an up date on this.
On 23.11.10 I sent £13,000, converted into Pesos, from Nationwide to BPI in Phil. It took four working days to arrive.
The Swift charge was £25 and the exchange rate was 69.378. The inter-bank rate on the day was hovering around 69.73. I don't think I would have done better any where else; unless of course you know differently !!!

PNB to PNB is far better John, it goes instantly. Recently I sent over considerably more than that I waited on ther phone and they confirmed it was in Phil, it took seconds and the charge for the amount was £30
johncar54
11th December 2010, 21:23
The £25 was the charge for any amount.
The main thing in exchange is the rate which one gets. Even a very small difference can make a big difference on a large transfer.
In my case £13,000 the difference between the bank rate (the max anyone or bank can get) was 0.35 of one peso under. But on the transfer that amounted to £63. I am not saying you, but people often do not look at the whole picture.

I can also recommend OrbitRemit (http://www.orbitremit.com/uk) as really good and great customer service also.

this is what the wife and I do. We have a PNB Europe account. We intend sending money via there global money card. The receiver does not need a PNB Account They collect there money card at any PNB Branch in the Philippines. They withdraw at there atm's. That card can be loaded by yourself anytime via there online site Each time you load the card It will cost you £5. Over £3000 the £5 fee increases. We intend using the money card next time we are there. We just send a card to ourselves Then collect it on arrival then top it up online as and when we need to without the credit debit charges. Yehey. This Christmas we intend sending each of Jane brothers and sister a card each with a certain amount but each costing us £5 per trans. They will keep there cards after they have spent so in case or when we have to send again we can without any undue expense and bother. Merry Christmas one and all !

I have just asked Norwich and Peterborough BS how much they would charge to transfer £50,000 to Phil. £40. Nationwide charge £25
I pressed Nor Pete what exchange rate they would apply, 63.5 to the £ .
HIFX show 68.25P to the £. So with Nationwide it would probably be 68.05.
That means if I used Nor Pete I would loose 230,000 P or about £3,500,. That is equivalent to about a 7% charge.
As I keep saying watch the exchange rate, its that which can screw you.

John, most specialist remittance companies do a good job.
Or
As has been mentioned before, bank to bank.( with PNB for example)
Having said that, I admit I do not know the Spanish market.
Iremit do have Spanish branch...... maybe worth a call or e-mail

Im sending my remittance through PNB Europe (London) through phone and my beneficiaries receives the money in just seconds, its already credited to their account. I think this is the fastest one... If they are using ATM they can already withdraw at the same time.
PNB also have this GFMC / Global Card, this is ATM special for OFW's beneficiaries if they don't have an account in the Philippines you can open this straight just let them know that you want to open a GFMC Card for yourbenef. This Card is 0.00 maintaining balance and account opening is for free. When you open an account for you benef. together with your remittance for them, all they need to do is to pick up the card in any PNB branch in the Philippines. I hope this can help...

Thanks for the info.
However, sorry to keep coming back to the same line, but the charges for making a transfer are seldom the main cost. As I described above, the difference in the exchange rate used by Barclay's Bank compared with Nationwide results in an enormous difference in the value of the amount transferred. (£3,500)
I should be grateful if anyone who has used PBN , in Spain (or other MOs they have used) would show the break down of how much they transferred, on what day, what the charge was and what the exchange rate was.
It is only with that info that one can know which MO is best.
Thanks Guys.

The speed of transfer is not necessarily what most people need.
With Nationwide I can go on line transfer a sum to the account I use for Phil and my wife's cousin can immediately withdraw the money. The exchange rate is always a smidgen under the interbank rate, BUT now Nationwide charge 2% plus £1 per withdrawal and if one does not use a VISA marked ATM in Phil then there is often a further 3.50 US dollars charge too.
But again that form of transfer is useless for large sums.

you can load from your uk debit card free and they will call you back in the phils free to do it
money is pretty instantly available after loading

I made the transfer on 26th Jan, using CHAPS, the cost was £25 fixed charge, that worked out at 0.05% as the amount was £48,000. The money was in the account in RP within a couple of hours.
The exchange rate was 69,175 (almost the interbank rate on the day)
Incidentally Nationwide messed up and delayed the transfer by a day. The rate fell slightly in that day (0.003). After complaining I got the refund for the lower rate (£144.50) plus £150 compensation.
Nationwide Debit card is still a reasonable way of drawing cash in RP I believe, even though they now charge £1 + 1%, but the rate is just about interbank.
If you have a better/cheaper way (with the interbank exchange rate) I would be pleased to know.

Then you can load your cards online ,by text or call Caxton during uk office hours and they will call you back and load from your debit card thats what i do and its worked fine for all of my 15 months in the Phils since sep 08:xxgrinning--00xx3:

I use caxton myself never a problem It might be worth checking on fairfax though competition can pay off
If you use your card for "shopping" you also avoid the ATM 200 (or some of it) fee I do that all the time per 10,000 piso which is a common transaction max at metro bank you can draw a second 10 k but of course another 200 :doh
If your not living in the city when ever I go to a mall i change several 1000 piso notes and use the small change in local stores and for trykes and cabs as its often a number to get change:xxgrinning--00xx3:

Maybe it was a joke, Central Bank of Nigeria !!!!!
On a more serious note.
I would still use a transfer (fee £25) by Nationwide Building Soc, as have an account there. Their exchange rate is also just about interbank rate.

Sending money to the Philippines. We use pnb. The recipients all have pnb money cards. We can send money online 24 7.
T hemoney card is only good for cash withdraw.
We've tried them all. We found pnb the cheapest and the best.

Be careful leaving your British bank cards behind in the philippines for wives and girlfriend to use.
T hecards are in your name so, its against banking practises for a third party to use. In fact if caught, both of you could get in serious trouble. A criminal record maybe. Not good to have when applying for the visa.
PNB in my experience of sending money to the Philippines for the last 5 years or so is the most cheapest and the most reliable. Great customer service too.
Im a cheap Charlie like most British :) I know it makes sense.

I gave a card to originally a Thai GF, then after that relationship, having married my Pinay bride, I gave a card to my wife's cousin, firstly a Cash card but when that ceased to be useable a Debit Card. I have told Nationwide several times on the phone and in emails that a card is there and although they of course have warned about possible abuse of the cards they have never said I cannot do it. I of course accept full responsibility for all transactions.
As a former police officer in UK I cannot think of any law that would breach.
For that matter, my son in UK has for the past 24 years been signing cheques drawn on my UK account. Again, whilst the bank would not like it, it is not an offence against UK law.

Thanks John. I did do it and I was wrong.
I tried to get cards in Jane's name. It wasn't possible.
She had to be living here etc. The pnb does take 2 or 3 weeks to set up and they want so much info, im sure that puts many off.
T hecost of sending per transaction is around 7 pounds. It rises when above 3 grand. The recipients are not charged for using the pnb money cards either. Info theory you can make infinite withdrawal without being charged.
When we go to philippines we use the same cash withdrawal method. I load the card online costing me 7 pounds, thats it. no more bank charges.
I was wrong John but, at the time I was ignorant of my actions. It not be an illegal activity but, in the eyes of the issuing bank, its fraud.

Just remember that in certain circumstances a Debit card can be used to as a credit card and Nationwide have what they call 'a shadow overdraft facility' on some debit cards, which means you can draw more than you have in the account.
I discovered it by chance when I accidentally overdrew my debit card account balance.
When I asked how that was possible, the first person in Nationwide did not believe it was possible. It was only later when I pressed for an explanation I discovered the shadow overdraft facility.

When I said it was not an offence in UK, I did mean it was totally lawful, not fraudulent in any way whatsoever.

Companies issue company credit/debit cards to their employees. The employees usually would have no connection with the bank, just like my wife's cousin in Phil.
Unless someone insists I would rather not spend a lot of time explaining the UK legal position. Please just take my word (former DCI ) that it is not illegal.

My husband did the same , he left his nationwide debit card with me in the PH ...no problems until the Nationwide starts charging for purchases and cash machines withdrawal http://www.nationwide.co.uk/current_account/foreigntransactions.htm
thats why we switched to BPI and PNB:xxgrinning--00xx3:

My company credit card has my name on it and its agreed with the card issuing company that i can use.
But if i used a card which was say issued to you even with your permisson it may not be illegal but it would be against the terms and conditions of the majority of cards I have seen it appears if the card issuing company which to uphold for some reason.
If you were to get an additional card for a person and its registered in their name there should be no problems although they may only issue to UK residents.
Again whether criminal law is broken is one thing but breaking terms and conditions of an agreement you sign with the card issuing company may leave u in a spot of bother in certain situations.
Also the companies may ask if payments keep being made abroad to check with you for security reasons.
Again many people get away with things but doesn't mean if the card issuing company want to they cant say you have broken the agreement if it suits them or comes to their attention..
Again would you write to your Bank and declare your son has been using your cheque book for the last 24 years? If he has been using your signature then i would think that was fraud surely?

I have not told my bank about my son signing my cheques as yes I am fairly sure they would object, however, as I said I have told them both on the phone and in emails about one of my cards being used in Phil by a relative. I even used this as part of my complaint when they stopped Cash Cards being used abroad to draw cash from ATMs. No problem arose.
RE the law.
I really did not what to explain the law. However, very simply :
Section 1 of the Fraud Act 2001:- In each case, the Defendant's conduct must be dishonest and his intention must be to make a gain, or cause a loss or the risk of a loss to another.
My son signing my cheques may be considered dishonest as the bank are being deceived into thinking it is my signature, however, vitally the intention must be to make a gain.
Without both parts, there is no offence.
Under the Counterfeiting and Forgery Act 1981
The offence of forgery. A person is guilty of forgery if he makes a false instrument, with the intention that he or another shall use it to induce somebody to accept it as genuine, and by reason of so accepting it to do or not to do some act to his own or any other person’s prejudice.
Again, whilst the cheque would probably be a false instrument it must also be done with intent to gain or cause another to loose. In our case, the second part is not present.

If after all the warnings "DO NOT SEND MONEY TO THE PHILIPPINES" you still want an easy way for regular transfers
Go to PNB Europe - open an account there
Get the filipino to open PNB Phillippines account
You pay minimal costs transfering money from PNB Europe to PNB Philippines - check out PNB Europes website
