Getting on your trusty "steed" :222: ... and pursuing your dreams, eh? In theory, it's not a bad  ... and I'm willing to wager :REGamblMoney01HL1: there are quite a few of us on here who've "upped-sticks" and done just that. But best to consider every aspect fully, before making any firm decisions. :welcomex: to the forum ... and be guided by others' experience.

:Hellooo: Hi steed 44, welcome to the forum
One day very soon I will relocate to Phils.
So at least we have one thing in common.
Just to get your think juices going, how old are you??
Do you have a UK income stream??
Can you manage financially in Phils?? I would suggest think about min P50,000 to
P100,000 per month
Please try not to consideremployment or business unless.........
Anyway, ask any questions you want... I would never try to be negative on your dream.
But would never want you to be in difficulty in Phils.
God Bless

i somewhat agree with you but at least 40k per month is needed to survive in the city. that is based from my monthly expenses considering that i live in a condo, pay for monthly personal bills and purchase basic needs (food, etc).

Hi steed,
I'm sure you will like it here. My stepfather who is a British moved here 18 years ago and have never been back to the UK. Though he got some properties that are on let. The town they living in with my mama just turned into city. But the cost of living, since it is in beautiful island of Cebu is low are between 15,000-20,000. But if you will be driving and going away a lot during weekends to keep you busy then it will be 40,000-100,000 depends on your lifestyle of course.
Life in the city can be expensive, crowded, noisy and hmmm polluted too whereas 2-3 hours from the city can be a total paradise.
Employment is not a good idea here, business is subjective and depends on what you are passionate about but consider not doing it as it can be so risky.
A friend of mind is with her partner for some years now and they built a house in one of the subdivisions here with great view and a pool. The business they do is they invite europeans to stay in their place at cost for lodging, food etc which can be long periods or short. They act as tour guides as well, taking them to various beautiful places and islands. So I think it is one of those safe business, like building an apartment and rent it out, or guesthouse, online related work.
I've seen how my parents struggled business and investment failures here and it is a good eye opener to me specially I am married to my loving husband whom I truly care about.
Stay with this forum and you will surely get some more ideas about moving to Philippines.

Hi Steed welcome :Hellooo:
It's a forum, with a lot of differing views, with members from all walks of life, but we all have a common connection & it works. :xxgrinning--00xx3: So, yes you will be able to glean plenty of information here.
It's very difficult to say how much money you would need a month, to live in the Philippines?
Members here often throw around figures, but it really depends on your personal circumstances & tolerance levels? ...Have you got a wife, gf, partner, kids etc.
Which Island are you going to live on...makes a big difference? City or province?...Do you need aircon, or can you manage without? Nippa hut, or a luxury apartment, with views over Manila Bay etc. etc...These aren't questions personally directed at you, just hypothetical & ones we all need to ask ourselves if considering a move over there.
Your best bet, if you haven't already spent time out there, is to stay for 6 months if you can, living at your comfort level....that should give you an idea.
Remember, everybody in the UK, is living on very different income levels, so the Philippines is no different....though you have to take in considerations, like there is no free health care, over there.
Food for thought :)

I know that sounds quite high purple, but I just based that on the assumption that some careful budgeting needs to include funding for healthcare, emergency, visa renewals, travel etc. Also that electricity cost more than UK, internet etc.
Also it's important to think about pension funds. Although I don't know the age of Steed, it is certainly something to think about.
I certainly agree, it IS possible to live very cheaply in Phils, but without an income stream it's not sustainable to keep living on savings. The income stream needs to be used for many things not just day-to-day living.
I have seen quite a few Brits out in Phils who did not budget for the future and are now in quite a distressing life.
Wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Have to say that my wife and her family can survive on dried fish and rice. I prefer not do that.
It's a great place to live (for me) but adjustments need to be made.
Personally I would not feel secure or happy to live in Phils anything less than P50,000
per month to budget with for the rest of my days.

I agree to some point Terpe, I think what I am quoting is based on four people in the family. As I am from small family and living comfortably on 50,000 max. Well, not for me but for my parents of course. Since me and my brother are both married.
The cost like electricity, phone and internet is more costly though.
I recommend for anyone who wants to settle in the Philippines to get medical and health insurance with good coverage though as it is very important than to feel sorry when anything happens.

Agree with that purple.
We are so very lucky here in UK in that all medical care is available free of charge at point of service. Including any ambulance service.
We tend to take this for granted.
(Well having said that it is sometimes quite difficult to find NHS dental treatment)
Medical costs and service availablity is an important issue.
Especially living in the provinces in Phils, where sometimes equipment and medication
is not easily available.
I experienced this first hand recently with my bro-in-law.

hi steed, welcome! great to know that you intend to move to pinas. However, you should know what will be at stake being here. In reality Pinas has many governmental problems on ist own. Wont you be pissed off seeing full dirt bins left unattended? try to have a long months of holiday first and see if you can tolerate living here. Of course you'll be enjoying the cheap prices of food, rent, etc. Good luck

My Filipina sister-in-law pretty much gave up trying to use the internet whilst in the Provinces this year. The connection was always bad and greatly affected by rain and other weather conditions too.
As already mentioned previously by others above, healthcare is not "free" in the Philippines so please do seriously consider what you are going to do healthcare wise as you will need some form of insurance.
Good luck with your future plans. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

i would ideally want to live out of the big cities, but the more i read the more disheartened i get and im beginning to think its a crazy idea. Money is the biggest factor, obviously if i had limitless amounts that would be great, but thats not reality, but 25k a month is pretty good. Its a tough decision that still needs much thought, but everyones advice is most appreciated

:)Hi yna... welcome to the forum..
I have just been reading your threads and am sorry for your predicament today!
Like everyone else.. this story does not stack up!!
I have spent some time in Kuala Lumpur...do you know which airline he was flying? Rightly if he is in transit to Manila he should not need to pass through Immigration & Customs.
However if he has a budget airline (Cebu Pac or AirAsia ) connection then he would have done as he would need to transfer from KLIA to LCCT.
No matter again why is the "jail lady" calling you? If this happened today then he would surely still be in the hands of the Customs staff at the Airport.
Malaysia does as stated by others have quite strict immigration and customs procedures.
His calls for help should be directed to his family & friends and if they do not help then he should be getting in touch with the British High Commission in KL NOT you!
Sever all contact now and make new friends here.....
DO NOT LET THIS EFFECT YOUR CHRISTMAS...

Hi everyone! I'm Desiree, 28 years old, graduated in New York University, and happily married to a man who I will be glad to make a lot of babies with! (love you honey)
I used to be in marketing back in 2004, for 3 years, but it didn't really float my boat. Perhaps I was in the wrong company? Ah well, I now work as a fashion designer (yes a big leap in industry) and consultant for GoodOrient, which creates in house designed asian apparels that fuses eastern and western fashion together, and fusing modern into traditionals. A lot of the cheongsams (chinese long dresses) are designed by me. I pick the fabrics, I design the cuttings, I put in the finishing touch, and I try them on after they're done. That's basically my job, and I love it!
After work, I love reading the latest gossip magazines and blogs, catch some streaming movies, watch youtube, and occasionally indulge myself and some friends inside TGIFridays' cakes or icecream. On the weekend I shop, jog with hubby and our 2 golden retrievers BeeBee and BooBoo, and experiemnt new recipes!
I've been living in China for 3 years now, and the cultural impact on me have ups and downs. It's just so much to explore, and I'm tougher than I was, 3 years ago back in Canada! Still experiences culture shock here and then, but it wasn't as bad as when I first came here. I kinda love it here! Other than the pollution....
This is it! My life story, in like 4 paragraphs. Short and sweet, just like me, physically =) Oh hey I'm very proud of my designs and work, so make sure you check them out, and you can contact me via them or this profile, and we can network if I find you interesting enough,or if you want some advice on fashion, or whatever!

hi steed....im from the philippines and live in manila....I would be happy to try to answer whatever queries or concerns you have about living in the philippines. Off the bat I would say a single guy from a "developed economy" coming in to teh philippines could get by on Php40,000.00 per month.Of course, there are locals here (millions) getting by on Php10,000.00 per month but I dont think the living conditions that that would allow would be suitable for you.....

thanks ackeeman, i know what you say about the locals living off 10000 php,im just looking for the simple life, i can adapt pretty well i think to local life.
I dont care really what luxurys i wont have thats some off the reasons why i want to get away from the uk.
There has been some bad experiences just recently in my life with my family that totally changed my outlook on life and what is really important.
I dont want to go into great details about what happened, but i dont really have much to lose by staying here or trying to live in phil.
I hope to hear more advice and information from you. thanks
