Pics of Filipino children

Photography has for a long time been one of my joys and especially in the Philippines. :)

I have a Canon 450d with a couple of lenses and often long to have a better model and lens like a 70d and the new 70-200 2.8 lens :NoNo:

I invariably walk around all the time with my camera as there are so many Filipino children who want their pictures taken. They are wonderful subjects, so full of happiness and almost always have smiling faces.

I also took some pics of teens in Daanbantayan on the island of Cebu recently (we got married here in August 2008), seems they were part of a group as they all met me later at night with their group T-shirts on.
They were fun to take pictures of and it was quite a challenge getting them all in.

Nice one - that camera looks great.

I never feel that worried in the Philippines but I suppose if I was carrying about £ 2,000 or £ 3,000's worth of stuff I would be more cautious.

It has been a dream of mine to have a brilliant camera and lens like the ones I mentioned earlier and to go over there on a mission to make a photography book made up of Filipino kids.

I seem to have a knack of capturing the right moment with the kids, but must admit that the moment is far easier to get these days with digital cameras without having to pay a fortune for film/slides like before.

I am a frustrated amateur photographer and wish I had gone to study photography at a much earlier age.

Nice pic Apo, I love Canon cameras and over the years have taken some brilliant pictures with my Canon EOS600 film camera. While we visited Bangkok at Christmas my sis in law bought me a 500D from Singapore ,wow what a camera and all my existing lenses should work with it. I have not tried my 100x300 zoom yet but others have told me it should work great.

The best pictures I ever took was my wife and baby son when he was weeks old, treasured photos:xxgrinning--00xx3:

I know very little about photography and cant seem to sit with a book and study like I used to, but armed with a good auto camera even I can get some good results.:)

Yes, I have noticed that! Any Filipina that I have dated has always been good at smiling for the camera. They always put on a smile easily and don't look uncomfortable as they are used to posing & smiling for the camera from a young age!

Yes Pete, auto is great when you first get the camera, but from what I have been reading and watching lately (rather belatedly I might add - should have been ingrained 30 years ago) Manual is the way to go, even the best newer cameras make so many mistakes in auto.

If you look on ebay, you'll see a load of new camera gear is from Hong Kong. It seems to be generally cheaper, but most times not really worth it by the time you get customs and VAT etc added on which of course I guess some people forget or don't realise.

Yes your right and I was using manual years back, then I went through a period when I couldn`t be bothered taking pictures and left it all to my wife to flit around with a small compact.
My wife and her sisters take snaps the same way as they talk...non stop:icon_lol:
I just mentioned that I was interested in a new camera and before I could say `shut that door` I was gifted with one. The learning process will begin soon:)

As you said in another post, and South-East boy, when I visited HK years ago I never found it cheaper to buy electrical or photographic goods after you took all things into consideration, also always worried about warranties. Singapore may be cheaper but best to weigh up the pros and cons.

The whole of Asia... all of them do this.... peace sign (hangover from WW2 and what happened to Japan) sometimes wrong way round for us Brits :D

This next one breaks my heart, these kids worked the restaurants on what was/is known as Baywalk, Mayor Lim on election took exception to the previous Mayor's policies and closed down ALL of the businesses on Baywalk, the reason given was non payment of tax by the restaurant businesses and prostitution associated with the live music entertainment that many of the restaurants clustered around.

Personally I never saw that side of it, certainly not obvious prostitution in that part of Malate.

We used to go for dinner, after church, every Sunday night to the Adriatico By The Bay, a really nice restaurant and good value, these kids always tried to sell us a few roses, I rarely if ever bought any from them as Ana and I had been together for a long time and this was a touristy thing, we always had James and half the rest of the family with us :) but I always paid for a rose or two when the girls came round, there was also a handicapped older gentleman who sold roses in the same area we helped him too, sadly not seen him again for several years.

Never saw these young lassies again either after the closure of the whole of Baywalk.

One of the businesses that they closed was part owned by Manny Pacquiao, again claims of non payment of tax and other fees.

The new 70-200 IS MkII is really too long on a 1.6 crop body like the 7D or any of the xxD and xxxD series.

For portraits and groups (from a distance) get the EF 50mm f1.4 or the 50mm f1.8 plastic fantastic :D

For a truly good standard lens on a 1.6 crop body either get the EF 35mm f2 or the EF 28mm f1.8

All of these are good value and will out perform any zoom by a HUGE margin :D

Seriously it would be hard to tell a shot from the 50 or 35 wide open from a shot taken on the 70-200.

The other option is the EFS 17-55 f2.8 which while it is expensive is a truly stunning lens!

Bad example but the ebay import has the risk of VAT even though they say they will compensate for that if you get caught.

If I spent a bit of time I could find loads of examples where the actual cash price is more on eBay from an HK retailer than it costs from Warehouse Express but it's late at night and I'm tired :)

sorry i cant but when i am there in shall look at ther prices, its like anything really shop around for the best prices, plus also there are so many differant lenes that will fit cameras nowdays, i should really be able to pick one up at lease

Hong Kong has definitely lost it's edge at least regards imports from HK to the UK, 5 years ago your could buy a camera from HK for 65% of the UK price now it's sometimes dearer or so close that you will get a better eBay bargain from a UK seller.

It's all exchange rates in the last couple of years the pound has devalued about 20 to 30% same reason we are only getting 70 peso to the pound now.

Every time I hear them talking about Quantitative Easing on the tele a shiver runs down my back and it's not just because camera prices will go up.

Last point. camera bodies still generally get cheaper over time, manufacturers get economies of scale and they tend to reduce the price over the lifetime of the model but lenses never get cheaper and they also retain second hand value extremely well again 60 or 70% no matter how old they get.

When it comes to photography glass is the only really important thing just about every DSLR camera made in the last 8 years will give you fantastic photos that will look stunning in print but they will look even better if the lens is really good.

i am always up for a bargin, the trouble is i always have to think do i want it and before you know what its gone, but then again i still have the money in my pocket, but with the camera its our hobbie together so a differant lens will be added soon and more pics taken

Passing through HK airport the other day was just as shocking price-wise as it was a couple of years ago, Steve.
They did say the exchange rate was the reason back then, and of course airport prices are always ridiculously high compared to the city :NoNo:

Can you pls explain your comment in bold?
This question has been on my mind for a while.
Do you think full frame is best? There seems to be people who prefer APS 1.6

xxD = Canon 20D 30D 40D etc

xxxD = 450D 550D and so on

All of these are 1.6 crop cameras, i.e. the sensor horizonal and vertical dimensions are 1.6 times smaller than a full 35mm frame.

This has the effect of mulipling your lens focal length by 1.6

Think of it like this every Canon EF lens produces a circle of light at the back big enough to cover a 35mm frame 36mm × 24mm but an APS-C frame is only 22.2mm x 14.8mm, this means it sees a much smaller part of the same circle of light.

The effect of this is to turn a 70-200 into a 112x320 lens, now for some that is a good thing, if you are taking pictures of sports it's a useful range but for pictures of people 112mm is quite long, you would have to stand far away from a person to get much more than head and shoulders in the shot, this limits the usefulness of the lens in my view on an APS-C camera, on full frame though it's great.

Usually on 35mm cameras a 50mm prime lens provides a standard view with little distortion but on an APS-C camera it's an 80mm portrait lens.

The Canon EF 70-200 IS mkII is stunning Canon have reworked the lens to make it good enough for the next generation of professional full frame cameras, it is significantly better than the older version of that lens but they upped the price a lot when they brought out this new one.

Personally yes Full Frame is best because then all your lenses behave the way they are supposed to but as you know there is only one real sensible choice in the Canon range which is the 5D mkII and that's 1600 quid, the other choice the 1Ds mkIII is 5 to 6 grand.

Full frame gives shallower depth of field than APS-C, that shot of the taxi kids was taken on my 5D (mark 1) with a 24-105 L series zoom (great lens) at f4 and as you can see the background is nicely blurred, to get the same blur on APS-C you need a faster lens (wider aperture).

Both formats have their place but Canon clearly see Full Frame as professional these days and APS-C as amateur and advanced amateur range.

I fancy the 7D myself, my 5D got destroyed last year sadly but I would miss the lenses working as they did in the old days i.e. at their real focal length.

Oh last thing the EFS lenses are designed specially for APS-C and won't work on full frame, they have a smaller image circle and it does not cover the required area, won't even physically fit on a full frame body.

Most of the shots I've posted here were taken on an old Canon 20D that I sold a couple of years back but the one you liked was on the full frame 5D :)

On APS-C the lens lineup you want is 10mm for extreme wide angle, 20 for moderate wide angle, 35mm as a standard lens and 50mm as a good portrait lens, any zoom starting at 55 on the wide end is good for everything else.

With the exception of sports photographers and wildlife nature photographers most of us have little use for focal lengths greater than 200mm, they are fun but if you analyse the pictures you take with them you find they don't get used a lot. Adobe Lightroom is a great program for analysing your entire photo collection and telling you what kit you are actually using :)

I should add that the 70-200 would be good for what is known as street photography i.e. candid pictures of strangers but the bulk and the fact it is a BIG white lens make you stand out more than you might want. Canon do an absolutely fantastic 200mm f2.8 prime in their professional L series and it is not expensive (by L standards) I have often thought of trying to get one second hand on ebay as an alternative to the 70-200 it's just as good but no zoom obviously.

Yep I use Lightroom 3 it is just wonderful the new RAW processing is much much better than what we had before even for old files.

The 7D is a 1.6 crop APS-C, that disappointed a lot of folk when it came out but saying that it is a fantastic camera great low light performance, professional build quality reasonable price, lots of modern features but some of us are not sure about the real image quality from it. It is really really good but at high ISO the grain is a bit artificial and that upsets the purists, I think I would still be happy with one, APS-C has it's place.

If you are used to the long end on an APS-C and you like that for your style of picture taking then yes I agree entirely, it is the bees knees :D

My only reservation about the 70-200 is that it's white, it sticks out like a sore thumb :D oh also it is really really heavy :D

I had the 70-200 IS f4 L and that was as sharp as the new 70-200 IS mkII f2.8 but one stop slower and a bit lighter, really really nice lens, fantastic IS.

My son is gwapo (handsome) takes after his mum, he was just over three years old at that point, Janna my daughter takes after me :)

Back to Photography, that last shot was taken on an 8 year old Canon 1D original, four megapixel thing and it's still great even in print!

Just goes to show that cameras have been good for a long time.

Lots of us have travelled a lot and have seen many wondrous things to photograph.
Personally, I have never found anything as exciting and easy as taking pics of Filipino kids; they all seem to love their pictures being taken. They don't want reward or thankyou's and when we show them their small faces on the LCD screen the shrieks of laughter fill my heart.

I was using various medium format 620 roll film cameras before I was 10 years old, we had a really good Kodak Sterling II that was my dad's pride and joy, he was a chemist and did all his own processing too.

If your Dad took that picture he certainly knew a lot and had a feel for composition.

Yeah he was pretty good, a lot of the time he used to print contact prints from the 620 negs, photography was an expensive hobby back then and saving money with small prints was a good idea, it also provided some incredible results in terms of resolution and grain. :)

I really like the way he included the pavement in (I'm guessing) Liverpool.
There were so few cars back then.
Think I will encourage my daughter to take photos asap.

I used to give my Canon 450d to my wife's younger sister who is 8 years young.
It is so good and inexpensive to let the kids snap away to their heart's content.

I'm a Scot Apo :) it's either Glasgow or Paisley, I don't recognise the street now I'm afraid.

That's a good point about giving the kids access to a camera early, my kids are just getting to the age I was back then, so I should try to encourage them too.

Even when very very young I was a techie, I was taking things apart and putting them back together when I was 4 or 5 :D my daughter Janna is a bit like that too but James has not shown that kind of interest yet.

And yes when learning kids can do some wonderful things sometimes!

Yeah 620 format was great basically the same as 120 but on my dad's camera the frame size was I think 6x9 cm, 120 film has a number of different frame sizes and is still in use even today.

Ah just found this, it was 6x9, this was our best family camera for around ten years, the shot of me was taken on one of these.

I forgot to mention the camera I was carrying was a Kodak Brownie 127 thing, I think it was a Kodak Brownie 127 model 1 from 1952 although I was still using it in the 60's, stuff used to last in those days :)

My first SLR was a Zenith. Do you remember those??
Before moving up to something better I bought plenty of lenses from fisheye to 500mm
and loads in between. Great stuff. Seem to remember my 500mm was Paragon or something sounding like that. Ha Ha. All cheap stuff but really great enjoyment.

I used to buy bulk B/W film and bulk 35mm Transparancy film. Load up the cassettes under the bedsheets. :icon_lol:

I remember that Pentax in 1975-76 I think. It was a toss up for me between the Canon AE-1 and the Pentax ME, I got the AE-1 in 1978 and have tinkered about since then.

I tried a brownie when I was about 12 but it did not take the place of the football boots :icon_lol:

I also went to my sisters wedding in the 80's and took lots of shots.
The camera man she hired told her at the end of the day that his camera broke and all was lost.
My sister wasn't that worried as I had taken some.
We had all been to the pub beforehand and I was horrified to find out that there was no film in there when I opened the back up :omg::NoNo::NoNo:

we have macthing DSLR camera model aposhark....i have told not to invest too much on the body but lenses...besides i believe its not the camera thats important to come up with beautiful images but rather how you compose an image..

Yep absolutely correct gparry!

In particular your point about composition :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Bodies are cheap and all of them are very very good now, lenses or as we say the glass is what counts, the good glass (certainly nowadays) never gets old. :)

Sadly the good glass is expensive but you can always pick a few cheap primes and then you will have wonderful glass for the price of a similar zoom covering the same range. Primes always beat zooms (at least until the 70-200L mk II zoom came along :)) :xxgrinning--00xx3:

I haven't got the equipment to take photo's like yours jimOttley or others here, They look great! I only own a point and shoot camera Cannon Ixus. :NoNo:

The pics here were taken outside my wife's cousin store in CDO. Next door was a tyre repair shop which always fascinated me, how they did repairs. Also scared me as most of the tyres were bald! :yikes: The kids were not afraid to come and say hello to the white man and trying their english!:icon_lol::icon_lol: mainly asking for money but I told mahal for them to choose from the sweets, peanuts and crisps. gave them a big grin :D

After a couple of bottles of San Migel, :D there was a dance off between me, my wife and her friends Vs the kids! :icon_lol::icon_lol:

The pictures are no way as good as yours, but they bring great memories for me. The clarity of the photo's you posted are amazing. The picture of the kid vendors looks like it was taken in the dark, was that using extra lighting also?

Yes that was night time down at the bay at an outdoor restaurant, I used a good flash with a bounce device to soften the shadows.

you tend to look a bit of a dork with this huge camera flashgun and big white bounce surface stuck on top :D but what the hell it's what you need to get the shot :D

If you look closely at the shot you will see that the shadows are soft and the light source is clearly high up, look at at the shadows under the girls chins.

The Lumiquest Pocket bounce is pretty cheap and very compact you just stick it to the flash by attaching to a Velcro strap that ties round the flash head. It's fantastic value for money but obviously you need a standalone flash unit to use it.

The above pic...well all the early ones, are actually from old negatives that I've uploaded to my pc and digitalised, so possibly a little quality lost there anyway...plus a few years dust. :icon_lol:

My stepson will be 24 in June, my stepdaughter 22 in May, and my son will be 18 in September, so a few years have come and gone, but all the children have been a delight. :)

:) I was really commenting on all the shots you've posted not just the ones on this thread, you have a good set of family memories. I went through a long long phase, nearly the whole of the 90's, where I took very few photos there's a big part of my first daughter's growing up that I missed making a proper record of.

I was just saying to my boy what a shame it was that I didn't even buy ANY sort of camera until I was into my 30s, :NoNo: and that he should save his pictures because he may get all nostalgic in a few years time.

Now I just have a few old passport photos and half a dozen shots that other people took to cover my entire life between 18 and 35. :bigcry:

You reach an age where you just would not think of going through it all again I think Graham, I have had two families 20 years apart, it's not easy.

Your Step daughter is almost a clone of her mum, quite amazing!
