Hi to all! I just arrived in UK last Monday with my son. Can anyone help on how to get a National Insurance Number? Do I just one them up or go there personally? My british husband gave me a number to call.

Thanks! It's really cold here now...

Welcome to the Uk Mickaela,
Yeah its really freezing here na, freeze our puwet lol.
You can either phone them up or go to the office. In my experience I phone them up and they sent me an application form (the requirements that they needed are stated on the form) then I sent it back to them after filling up using the envelope that they provide in the pack. After 2 days I received a letter from them stating my national insurance number and telling me that my card will be sent 6 to 8 weeks. And yeah I did receive mine around 6 weeks after my application.
hope that helps a bit :)

I thought that as a foreign national you had to attend an interview at a specifically allocated Job Centre .... see ....

.... at least that was in our case, and in the case of all friends that we know.

My wife also had an interview for NINO ( I went with her), but as I understand it should be it's "random" selection.
Same as British Passport application, my wife had interview and so did all her friends, but it is supposed to be a random selection.
That's life:rolleyes:

Yup ... phone up your local Jobcentre+ ... an appointment will be arranged for you to attend a short interview - bringing along your passport and proof of address. Your National Insurance Number will be sent to you within a couple of days ... and the 'Card' should follow a few weeks later - depending on how busy they are. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

We went there ( Jobcentre ) personally but they advised us that we can do it through phone .
I didn't went for an appointment or interview, my husband called the Job Centre and they ask the status of my visa which is a spouse visa, confirmed our address and they sent me an application form for National Insurance which I filled in and sent it back to them through post( with scanned copies of my passport and visa) ...In about a week I received a letter from them with my National Insurance Number and my NI card arrived in about 6weeks.

Having read earlier advice on this forum about obtaining a National Insurance Number, I took my flipina sister in law to the local job centre plus (in Cambridgeshire) in November 2010, only to be told that the application couldn't be dealt with there and we were given a telephone number to ring for an application form.

It appears that certain areas do things differently, so it's worthwhile checking before going to the job centre on what might be a wasted visit. Once the phone call was made, the form took a couple of days to be received here and the application was processed by the Department for Works & Pensions within 10 days and without the need for an interview.
