Tonight's rare lunar occurrence, when Earth's natural satellite is only a mere 356,575 kilometers out in orbit, brings the moon to its closest position to Earth.

It looked really big and bright last night :xxgrinning--00xx3:
Even noticed it about 6pm against an almost still blue sky :)
Hope tonight will be clear as I have my camera and tripod all set up ready :)

I tried that last night, but with a regular digital camera, but there are not enough settings to allow you not to get just a big white ball. I tried also putting my binoculars on the tripod and doing it, but again the light is too strong, i'll post up the best one later

Best setting on a normal camera is SPORT, but due to it's brightness you need a really quick shutter speed.
You can try using a webcam.

I got everything set up tripod, camera and a variety of potential settings. My wife told all her friends both here and in Phils how great these photos will be.
.....................................................................................Now it's cloudy, :bigcry:
I'm still hoping but I know inside it's not gonna happen.
My wife has told me I'm 'Kurikongs' ====well that's what it sounded like.
I did ask what it meant and she just said 'Kurikiongs' :doh
So looks like I am 'kurikongs' :D
he he he , I'm still set up.....maybe the cloud will go ...... ever the optimist :D

But ... according to some folklore, those living in more rural spots should listen carefully for the distant howl of wolves in the woods :cwm24: - especially the likes of Simon [Sim11UK] who, I believe, lives in just such a place!

It IS ... in a sense  ... since I understand "kurikongs" means itchy!

Itching to get to grips with something or other ... in this case, it would seem Terpe's wife is implying he's keen to have his camera ALREADY set up on its tripod to capture the right moment. :)

That's beacuse you don't view it often, especially with being in Manila. Especially with the smog and lights. I can see the Mily Way with the naked eye where I live.
Jupiter has gone below the horizon now in the UK, but if you look to the left of the Moon you'll see a bright 'star', that's actually Saturn and with binoculars you can see it's rings.

If you follow this link you will be on the website of a truly great Filipino Photographer Romy Ocon.
This is one of his shots of the moon from a couple of days back, taken in Manila :-
