Tony, it's quite easy (and not expensive) to get a replacement Birth Certificate issued.
But there are very few cases where it is possible to get the name on a birth certificate changed.
Birth certificates are meant to be historical records of the facts as they existed at the time of birth.
But there are some exceptions:-
If the parents were not married at the birth registration, and the father did not attend the registration process, it is possible to amend the birth certificate. It can be altered to show the fathers details and the child's surname can also be altered.
Please note that both parents must agree to such a change.
Changing a Mistake.
A registration of a birth is a historic record and so is intended to record the facts as they were at the time at which the registration took place.
However, if it is found that an error was made at the original registration, changes are possible. Applications for corrections should be made by the person who first registered the birth and at the same Register Office.

Hi Tony .... if you decide to get a copy of the original birth certificate you can either obtain one from the original Register Office where your birth was registered or, you can pay £9.25 and order one online from the General Register Office. Their website is https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp and you will need to provide references for the latter which I'd be happy to look up for you (I'm into genealogy and do it all the time). The certificates take about a week to be received from the GRO, unless an express handling fee is paid, in which case it can be turned around in 24 hours.
If you need the references for an online application, send me a PM with the full name at registration plus month and year of birth.
