I bought a multi gym from Argos last year with the intention of turning my garage into a gym and using it on a regular basis. It's been assembled for about a year, I used it once last July and since then it's just been an obstacle in my garage:icon_lol:
I usually do a 6 week exercise programme 6 - 8 weeks before I head out to the Phil's so that my gut doesn't hang over my shorts when I'm on the beach. Nothing too strenuous, 50 - 100 sit ups a day and about 100 press ups a day. It's something fairly simple that can be done in the house, without any equipment and 20 or so minutes spare every day. Jogging or cycling is far too ambitious for me.
Anyway, I got home from work a bit early today, dusted the multigym off and spent half an hour on that, so I should think I won't be able to move my arms, neck, shoulders or back for the rest of this week:bigcry:
I'm not looking to turn myself into a nightclub doorman type with muscles on muscles, I just want to tone myself up and burn a few pounds off, so I'm going for repetitions rather than outright weight lifted.

Actually I was a regular gym attendee at one time - 3 or 4 times a week, plus a York 2001 home gym in the kitchen.
Then I was working on construction sites and tunnelling until well into my forties.
Now my son is really into the body-building, and looks super fit and strong.
MUST go and get back into shape !!! :Jump: :xxaction-smiley-047

For most of my life I have used free weights, then a mulitgym and between the ages of 20-40 was quite fit and had plenty of muscle:D
I am about to start using my gym soon although it's pretty knackered by now so might invest in new one:)
Oh I know the feeling the next day when i haven't used it in ages:Help1:
I will eventually (when i have lost more weight) take up the protein powder and creatine and try to recapture some of my youth:icon_lol:
First things first and to loose gut and get some endurance back is my main aim at the moment:xxgrinning--00xx3:

Well done Les! I was thinking of going for a walk today from work but it started raining this afternoon:NoNo:
We might go for a quick rush around the harbour this week if the weather gets better.
I am not really a gym fanatic, I did joined a gym near my place last year but I have been there only 4x's and I paid £40 x month for 6 months! What a waste of money:doh
Just like you, my main goal is to lose a little bit of those happy fats and keep fit!:D
Thank you for posting your activity- hopefully i can post an update tomorrow or the day after.:xxgrinning--00xx3:

Take it easy Englishman- maybe you can try long distance walking:D
When I started cycling I was really struggling to do 2 miles, I was swearing to my husband accusing him of everything like he wanted me to have a heart attack or he is finding joy watching me breathless after a climb:icon_lol:
I am really greatful of him for not giving up on me (I swear I was really bitchy those early days he took me out to cycle) and now I really feel the benefit of being more active- I am seeing the results and I am happy of what I achieve everytime I climb those hills!
I really advise to everyone to find some activity that you will enjoy and that can keep you fit:D Every effort you put in it will pay you back doubles!:)

...i havent got the time any more.
Soapbox time.
Easy to say this.
But we all have the same amount of time every day. That's 24 hours.
We cannot save or store it. We use it in realtime.
Whatever we do with our time is totally about priorities
Now just what we do with time is solely about priorities.
When someone will say " I didn't have time" that really means, I didn't give that task a a high enough priority.
Time management basics. Allocate priorities.

Congratulations to Les, Peanutz, and other members who are doing something about getting / keeping fit ! :)
Exercise is more than a hobby. It's the main factor, together with not over eating, in preventing obesity. The choice is stark - stay overweight, and increase the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, several cancers, osteoarthritis, heart disease, strokes, and generally worse quality of life with reduced life expectancy :yikes: - or do something about it :).
The UK Health Service can't cope with the current level of obesity. Perhaps more surprising is that the Philippines also has a major problem - obesity contributes to the top three killers ( heart disease, stroke, and cancer ) as in the UK.
There's good evidence that half an hour's exercise a day is beneficial. Excessive exercise brings its own problems. It's not good enough to claim insufficient time, or even to reminisce about what you used to do - it's what you're doing NOW which counts :xxgrinning--00xx3:.
It also matters little what exercise you choose or where you do it - that depends on age, fitness, where you live ( very different climates in our two countries ), and what you enjoy doing :). Clearly if you already have health problems you should not attempt too vigorous exercise without a medical check up.
Don't be too hung up on measurements such as BMI ( Body Mass Index ) - -they're not relevant to everyone. "Fad" diets are, by definition, also doomed to failure and are mostly a waste of money. Feeling and looking better will soon become obvious with even a moderate amount of exercise :).
Today ( not 20 years ago :NoNo: ) I had half an hour's swim, and an hour's walk on the beach. That can't compete with 5 hours' surfing yesterday by my son, but I want to maximise my chances of living a healthy happy life - surely what every member would also wish to do :xxgrinning--00xx3:.

I did 2 miles walk today:D I'm not sure how many calories I burnt as my bloody phone has already run out of charge.
Today is windy and a little bit of drizzle here and there, nice feeling of the wind in your cheeks.
I have noticed a slight pain on my feet while walking- I am not sure if it was my cycling last Sunday that have caused it. I may try to take some of the magic pills that has been suggested here.:D

Just did 15 miles on the bike to Windsor and back. Outward via roads return mainly along the River Thames towpath. Places of interest passed Windsor Castle, Irish Guards statue in Windsor, Windsor Racecourse (Bob The Builders on stage today) Eton College (Olympic) Rowing Lake, People Bungee jumping from a crane, Heston Blumenthal & Giancarlo Caldesi's restaurants in Bray (was close to Roux Bros Waterside).
You can see the details and where I went with Google Earth here

Nice one les certainly a good thing to measure your exercise see how you progress. When i first started doing the same I realised I was running far further than I thought I was :xxgrinning--00xx3:
I make sure i do a couple of walks a day and most days a run of 6 km's or more with more like 12-15 km's at the weekend:)
A couple of years back I got in a but of a bad way with a bad back and started with walks which got longer and brisker before resuming my running.
One thing i noticed is many Phills find it odd to walk as when in Phill trycycles get used for anything more than a stroll round the garden:rolleyes:
The wife now seems like an olympic athelete when back in Phill walking with the family around a mall:D
But noticed many richer/better off phills are getting into Jogging and going to the Gym as the diet get more western in size and calories:D

Yes this should be an interesting, inspiring thread for all of us who want to get fit:D
Some members are already fit ! Today two of us had an enjoyable three hours in Scarborough's South Bay with a kayak - the rowing was one thing, carrying the kayak to and from the beach was another :). It wasn't sensible to have smart phones or cameras with us, so there's no record of our activity this time :NoNo:.
Fewer than 2% of the "active" ( regularly contributing ) forum membership have so far posted what they're doing to get / keep fit :doh. I've done my bit to support Les, and make no apologies for listing the risks of NOT exercising :NoNo:. But the exercise can be enjoyable in moderation, you don't have to feel pressurised, intimidated or necessarily compete with others :xxgrinning--00xx3:. Nor, if it doesn't suit, do you need to record every single activity - just be true to yourself :). Once you accept the need for exercise - there's NO excuse for not exercising - then it should become part of - and prolong - your life :).

This morning I had my first sea swim at Scarborough - no wetsuit, and RNLI on standby ( my son is a lifeguard ) :). It lasted 15 minutes max, but you have to respect my "trusted" status as I have no photos to prove it !:icon_lol:
The North Sea temperature right now is around 12 Centigrade, and it's not much more anywhere else on the UK coast ( 15 around Channel Islands ). In the Philippines it's 28, much the same as indoor pool temperatures here :xxgrinning--00xx3:.
Sudden immersion in the sea off the UK, or our rivers / reservoirs can lead to cardiac arrest from immersion before there's time to drown :yikes:. It all depends on age, general health ( and alcohol levels ) - I've survived to post this news :xxgrinning--00xx3:.

Climbing hills is going to be a challenge, I usually hates it when I first started I gradually built up my endurance -all of it is bloody hard work:) but there is nothing compare to the feeling you get after a long hard work ride I feel proud of the achievement I did!
With a good saddle and padded short you will be more comfy and long distance ride will be easy peasy. :D

We have a guest here at the moment who has one of these blood pressure machines..The whole family have used it and we are all within the normal range..Between 120 and 135..
When you have a 2 hectare garden and have to carry 5 gallon drums of water around etc exercise comes with the territory!!
Now I say we were ALL in the normal range but thats not strictly true..
My 58 year old brother in laws blood pressure constantly reads between 205 and 214 over 165 !!
The machine takes far longer to calculate his blood pressure..Obviously!!
He doesn't seem very worried about it as he reckons its been that high since 1987 when his application to work in Libya was refused for failing the medical.. :yikes:
He shows absolutely no symptoms or signs of illness and the local doctors are amazed at why he is not having a heart attack..:Erm:
What do you reckon Doc?

You're right about the exercise ! People who do manual work, especially in a hot climate, may have neither the energy nor need to take recreational exercise :xxgrinning--00xx3:.
As for your brother-in-law, if the "blood pressure machine" is validated (www.bhsoc.org/how_to_measure_blood_pressure.stm), then it's too high, even without obvious symptoms or signs. It needs investigation and treatment IMO. Rather than "hijack" this thread, I'll post a separate one under "Health Issues" :).

Enjoyed the test ride but why I always have to try the hardest route beats me see the steepness of the hills!
It's the run tommorow though when i get back from my London job.
Your bottom just needs 'running in'.....always like that when you haven't cycled for a while. :)

Day 8 of my gym workouts, just done another 30 minutes in my garage/gym. I've managed to do 6 20-30 minute sessions in the last 8 days, and always try to do 100 sit ups a day, 50 in the morning and another 50 in the evening. Even after a week I can feel it's starting to do some good, feeling more toned up and less saggy already:icon_lol:

The hardest part was motivating myself to start, now I'm in the swing of it, it's becoming addictive and I don't look for excuses not to do it tonight.
Good luck with your exercises too Les:xxgrinning--00xx3: cycling and running looks like too much hard work for me at the moment, but I might give it a go if I can pack up smoking first. I think it will kill me if I keep on smokiing.
I can't offer any advice on weight loss other than take in less calories than you use in a day, and try to avoid anything high in sugar and saturated fat, and if possible only eat food you prepare yourself, ie salad, veg and meat or fish (nothing manufactured or processed). I started reading food labels a few years ago and it's scary how much sugar is in some of the things we eat. Processed food is the worst for sugar content, especially the one that clain they are low fat:rolleyes: sometimes they can be upto 40 or 50% sugar:yikes: I was 14.2 stone ten years ago, and I'm now 11.6:xxgrinning--00xx3:I did get down to 10.13 last year but that was too skinny and have bulked up a bit since I've been doing a few exercises on and off over the last yr.

Thanks for reminding me about swimming though Doc, something I do enjoy at the pool, and I think a great exercise for general toning up, plus of course a heart and lung workout. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

I hope to swim in the North Sea again this summer, but probably not on Christmas Day :NoNo:.
The Scarborough area no longer has an outdoor pool ( lido ), a sign of changing times, and it's true we're used to swimming in warmer water these days. The nearest lido is at Ilkley, West Yorkshire ( unheated, but next to an indoor pool ), although there are a surprising number of lidos still open around the UK :).http://homepage.ntlworld.com/oliver.merrington/lidos/index.html

You may remember I met my honey competing in a mountain marathon and Hong Kong, we also competed in dragon boat racing anmd adventure racing.. ah those were the days, now sevrel years later we have two little ones 3 1/2 and 21 months, my honey plays tennis, we still run but less distance and severity of terrain, now I do push ups (lying on back lifting the littlle ones) arm curls one holding on to each forearm, leg lifts, one on each leg bouncing, "horse" rides in the sitting rooms, and anything else invloving flying then around LOL. I work away mon to thurs so can usually get out for a run or use the hotel gym/swim but still feel unfit 9cannot help comparing back to glory days of being very fit LOL). When our kids are a bit older it will be hill walking/trail runing, body boarding/surfing, cycling and anything else I can do to keep them off those damn machines hehehehehehe

forgot to say .. keep at everyone, feeling fit is a great feeling.. the personal goal worked well for me when coming back from an injury which stopped me walking never mind running for 3 or 4 months back in Hong Kong, We lived on Lantau Island at that time just by a ferry pier and one day as came round the headland i noticed a sitting out area (pagoda shaped) on top of a long rising ridge not so far from our place and decided I was going walk up there as my 1st effort in getting back into training. I got my pedometer(no smart phone then) and set off next morning, took over 50 minutes to do just the 4km but I decieded there and then that I would get that down to under 25. Went out either every morning at 6am or evening around 8pm for just a month or so and just watched the time come down. 3 months later it was just the 1st marker on my 20km run around the villages and over the peaks. The key as others have said is to get started and then keep challenging yourself.

Well Les, I had a good look in the mirror this morning (yes, plucked up courage ), and I didn't like what I saw.
Totally out of condition, poor muscle tone.
What is annoying is that for my age, theoretically I'm in very good health, and with only a small amount of toning up I'd look little different to when I was say 25.
Not many people can say that.
So, time to get a grip !!!
