Boholanas were prey for Internet
Cebu Daily News

(Boholana - a female from Bohol)

They had jobs waiting for them in Luzon with “Internet” operators, even though the young girls didn’t how to use a computer.

What kind of work?

They were told to expect to “face the computer and follow instructions” to be given by a foreigner.

This was the account of four of the 15 Boholana girls who were stopped from boarding a ship to Manila Friday afternoon indicate they were targets of cyberpornography.

Another group of three girls and two male youths about to sail for Manila was stopped by Maritime police at the Pier 4 SuperCat terminal in Cebu City yesterday afternoon.

Aged 15 to 23, the travelers, all from barangay Kabitoonan in Toledo City, said they were promised jobs in Manila for P3,000 a month.

“The girls were fair-skinned and good-looking. I don’t think they were intended to be hired as housemaids,” said Senior Insp. Joselito Blazo, head of the 701st Maritime Police Station.

The young travelers said their recruiter, a Toledo City resident, left ahead of them by plane and was supposed to meet them at the Manila South Harbor.

In the aborted trip of 15 Boholanas who were stopped at the Cebu City pier over the weekend after a security guard noticed with suspicion their young ages, the first theory was that they were all heading for jobs as nannies and maids in Manila.

But Assistant City Prosecutor Rodulf Joseph Carillo told Cebu Daily News he learned about the real job awaiting some of them after speaking with four of the minors during yesterday’s inquest hearing.

The underage girls were presented along with their two Tagalog-speaking adult escorts, who were charged with violation of Republic Act 9208 or the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003.

A similar scenario of cybersex exploitation was given by Jaybee Binghay, spokesperson of the Dept. of Social Welfare and Development, which now has custody of the girls.

Binghay said she talked with the rescued girls. She described them as “very island-ish, shy and cooperative.”

The girls said they didn’t know how to use the Internet yet, and had only heard about computers but never saw one.

The minors come from poor fisherfolk communities in barangay Nasingin and Jagoliyao in the island of Getafe, Bohol.

“They are typical children. They didn’t know that what was done to them them was wrong,” said Binghay.

Prosecutor Carillo said four of the girls described how they were invited to seek jobs in Manila by the recruiter, who initially paid P1,000 to P1,500 to their parents.

The prosecutor spoke with them in a room where news media were not allowed to enter.

He said the girls were told that their jobs in an Internet cafe would only require them to “face the computer” and “follow” whatever instruction a foreigner would give them.

A total of 12 minors and three young women from Bohol were bound for Manila when they were stopped at the pier with their two escorts.

The minors said they were invited to work in an Internet cafe in Pampanga. The other girls were told they would be hired as nannies and housekeepers.

According to the prosecutor, the victims said they were briefed by the recruiter to claim they were over 18 years old, if someone would ask about their age. /Ador Vincent Mayol Reporter with reporter Candeze Mongaya

You quote a successful outcome in this case, Maria :). The topic was raised a few weeks ago ( "Swedish porn-site owners jailed for life"). It does beg a lot of questions. Although there is legislation ( Violation of Republic Act 9208 http://www.chanrobles.com/republicactno9208.html and Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Trafficking_in_Persons_Act_of_2003 ) how often are there successful prosecutions ? Probably not often.
How common is cybersex in the Philippines ? Probably common. How often are the girls participating because of trafficking or of their own free will to earn "easy" money for supporting family and / or studies ? It's illegal and morally wrong but
is it safer than "real" sex by prostitution ? At least in theory there's no chance of violence or sexually-transmitted disease from those paying for the cybersex, although they may be at risk from the traffickers themselves.

Too many horror stories!

An Australian Mate of mine was surfing in Mindanao last year and after he came out of the water was approached by a poor fisherman who pleaded with him to " just take" one of his 5 daughters to be a maid "or"????:omg: that he had all ready and lined up for my friend to look at!
This is how poor and desparate these people sometimes are. My Aussie Mate is married to a Pinoy and can speak a little of the local dialect, he put a few pesos in the fishermans hand feeling sorry for him and his kids and drove off alone. He later recalled to me that the kids look mystified and were aged between approx 12-17!:NoNo:

Tragic story

I myself was offered a 16 year old wide eyed innocent as i was walking through a Southern Chinese city 3 years ago, i ranted at her low-life pimp but obviously he did not understand.
Sadly this is rife all over Asia!:NoNo:

A few months ago I was standing on the street outside my hotel in Kota Kinabalo, Sabah minding my own business have a cigarette, while my g/f waited upstairs for me. I was approached by a toothless mother and her teenage daughter, the mother was very explicit in describing what she would sell her daughter to me for:NoNo: They moved on when the hotel porter saw them.

Isn't Cambodia where Gary Glitter ended up?

Maria copied and pasted an article about cyberpornography which prompted several questions, so far unanswered either by her or anyone else. Appearing in front of a webcam giving nude "shows" to paying viewers is not the same as physical sex. This activity seems to be common in the Philippines ( and other countries ). Not all females, males, or ladyboys taking part are under age. Not all are trafficked - and therefore presumably unwilling - participants. How many of those trafficked are physically abused - and therefore at risk of violence / sexually transmitted diseases ( STD's ) - is uncertain. Traffickers /pimps deserve punishment. But there seems to be a significant number who perform voluntarily for easy money, to support family / studies, with protection of identity and and no direct risk of violence / STD's.
I'm not condoning the practise, merely trying to understand it. I would not seek to judge those over - 18 year olds who are driven ( but not forced by others ) to cybersex through desperation because no other employment is available :NoNo:.

no other employment is available :NoNo:.

:cwm3:some of these people refused to work a hard earned money. They want an easy money thru this. Some are innnocent, some being force by family/frenz, involuntary, some they are aware but no choice coz as I've said it's easy money & they don't have any skills/job to look for...:NoNo: so upsetting.
My last job in the Phils at DSWD working w/ girls/ woman aged 12-24 who are victims of incest, rape & involuntary prostitution is one of my unforgetable jobs learning how sad other stories is  mostly they are so naive & no choice...lots of horrible stories untold in the public.

You don't need an island Graham, just stay at The Citadel on P.Bougos St in Makati:omg:

It is truly dreadful there, approx 15 girlie bars in the street, lots of street girls aggresively touting their services, pimps and touts offering girls or viagra if you take a walk outside to visit the 7-11 or have a smoke. By far the worst are the ladyboys though, they will not take NO for an answer even if you have your g/f on your arm. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a prude in anyway, I've seen and done a lot in my time, I don't take the moral high ground on these issues, each to their own. I can also speak lots of choice Anglo-Saxon words, but it is all a bit too much, even for me.

The Adelphi in Liverpool is worse.....it's the only hotel I've stayed in where room service knock on your door at 11pm and ask if you have a girl in there with you? If you say no, they offer to find you one:icon_lol:
