Having attended a routine appointment with the 'Diabetic' Nurse earlier this week, I discovered that both my sugar & cholesterol levels had risen marginally since my last session 3 months ago. Hence ... there's some suggestion I may *need to start on medication for my diabetes. As yet, no firm decision has been made ... but it's highly likely I *WILL, following consultation with the Specialist next Thursday. And, IF SO ... then it'll mean giving up a lifetime's enjoyment of sweets, chocolate and ice cream !!! :omg:

I suppose I must have been the same as Graham with my lovely cigarettes.
But, ever the optimist I always felt I could quit and live without them if I wanted. But not until December 31st 2010 at 10:30pm.
I've turned into an anti-smoking devil now :cwm23:
But I still have the amber nectar, the golden throat charmer that's always on half price offer somewhere.
Would it be so hard to really live without that angel crying on my tongue?.................
Would I really want to?....................Nah :D

Sorry to hear about the diabetes Arthur.
I've given up smoking for 2 or 3 years on more than one occasion.
I'm now down to 5 a day, and gradually stopping, so fingers crossed.

arthur may i just reassure you, my youngest son has been type one for 14 yrs and now with his new regime of insulin he can and does take advantage of all those heavenly delights, my mum type 2 also has the hunger for the sweet stuffs... but if ur type 2 there is evidence to prove u can eradicate it .. simply by ur diet...:xxgrinning--00xx3:

This is what I have already said about diabetes ( # 24 in your " white rice " thread ) :-
Diabetes, especially type 2 which accounts for three-quarters of cases, is increasing world-wide. There are around 240 m ; at least 2 m in the UK and more than twice that number in the Philippines. Many are undiagnosed until too late. It's easier to detect ( urine glucose ) BEFORE multiple problems arise ( heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness ). They cost a lot more - in every sense.
A healthy diet, low in fat, sugar, and salt, with regular exercise and keeping to ideal weight are often sufficient. Insulin ( especially in type 1 diabetes ) or other drugs may also be needed to lead a normal lifestyle. Changing to brown rice and other wholegrain foods are only part of the answer to this global disease.
The Philippines allegedly has some of the highest prices for medicines in Asian countries. The problem, as always, is affordability - of drugs and healthy diet. Screening for - and treating - early diabetes is SO much better than dealing with the diseases it causes . The public health insurance company PhilHealth paid out over 250 m pesos for diabetes-related admissions in 2006. Anyone with loved ones in the Philippines should seriously think about health insurance . Type 2 diabetes may have no symptoms until something serious, like a heart attack, announces its presence.

This link might be helpful :xxgrinning--00xx3:. http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/treatments/healthy_living/nutrition/dietary_diabetes.shtml
