From what you say it sounds like IELTS?
If it was IELTS, then a score of 4.0 equates to a pass at B1 level, which is higher than the A1 level required by UKBA.
So all is OK. Well done. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

I thought the exams was okay but of course i was so nervous. Before i take the exams i did a self review with the links i found in here. Then, i did a 2 mock assessment at the test provider which really helped alot. The mock was similar to the real exams so i had an idea what the exams are.

Good luck on ur test:xxgrinning--00xx3: Dont pressure yourself and do a review:)

hi i just receive my score,,5.5 IELTS test,,overall.

The minimum allowable score for any individual section (Speaking and Listening) is 3.5
Anything less will not be enough for visa purposes (unless written confirmation from UKBA under special dispensation)

I looked on the UKBA web site it say minimum score for a pass is 4.0.................

That's an interesting point John_10.
The UKBA approved listing seems to indicate:-
Level B1=4
Level B2=5.5
Level C1=7
Level C2=8.5

So they obviously accept 0.5 grades

The IELTS scores indicate:-
CEFR Level B1 = IELTS 3.5-4.5
CEFR Level B2 = IELTS 5.0-6.0
CEFR Level C1 = IELTS 6.5-7.0
CEFR Level C2 = IELTS 7.5-9.0

So a score of 3.5 would equate to level B1 which is above A1

I wonder if UKBA have deliberately stated the minimum score they will accept at the higher level B1 Hmmm

I think I will need to send an FOI request to UKBA to seek a written confirmation.

Thanks for that.

Hi jencha, i wanna ask where you took the english language test? I'm here in UK and i'm going back to the phils, just to take the test. I got married here last aug. 11, applied for FLR but they are requiring a new test since my english test before is no longer valid. It is not possible for me to take the exam here because my visa will expire in a month, the earliest appointment i got is Nov. 14,2011. Many thanks Regards Alma email almaenrera@yahoo.com

Your friend would be well advised to re-take the test. UKBA does not use overall scores.
The UKBA approved listing states a score of 4 is required for each of listening and speaking.

Since 3.5 is 'technically' equivalent of a pass for level A1 I previously questioned them on it. It took quite a long time and a number of e-mails to get anything close to a real answer, but eventually said that minimum pass at IELTS is scored at 4.0

Submission of a score at 3.5 would need an ECO to act outside of his guidance.
Far too risky in my opinion.
