Hi

I had a 2 questions about SRRV, NBI and Shipping and I have had replies that are giving me advice on not moving.

Background

51, British, Never been to Davao, Only been to the Philippines once may years ago for a quick visit. Moving with my 5 year old son 1/2 Asian but not Filipino.

It has been suggested that some parst of Davao are like Mossside, Manchester

Does anyone have any first hand experiences of that and can I ask if you lived in Manchester and was aware of Mosside - would you avoid living in Manchester or just not visit Mosside

I am not going to RP for sex, cheap beer or girls - i intend to live everyday life on a gated community near by the school -more than likley in Martina where most of the ex pats are - cook from home and have weekend trips to Samal

So what I am not seeing that people are advising me against this move - I have a 100,000 budget per month and It seem plenty to me

Thanks

Good analogy that. And of course most cities in the UK have their dodgy areas. There are dodgy places in both Aberdeen and Liverpool:icon_lol:. However, why would one choose to live in Moss Side when you could live in Altrincham, for instance? Why would you choose to live in Seaton when you could live in Banchory or Braemar?

Presumably you have freedom of choice on where you might settle?

Anyhow, Moss Side isnt as bad as it used to be. Or is it? My son has his trumpet lessons there and his teacher lives there and plays for the Manchester Philharmonic Orchestra. I had an op in the BUPA hospital, 5 years ago, there (Whalley Range). A lot of the high rise blocks have been lopped. Isn't there a strong student fraternity there?

I lived in Manchester for 27 years and personally took a wide birth around Moss Side most of the time. But it has changed a lot since the mid eighties when we first moved to Manchester (Trafford). My ex wife was brought up in Moss Side in her teens in the seventies and survived.

I'm sorry if you perceived a hint of negatativity to your questions. I'm sure it was only down to concerned advice.

Your initial post didn't really contain any hint of a strategy. It really just came over as someone wanting to 'jump off the world' without giving any real thought to their plan.
I feel that now that we know just how much planning and research you have actually done, any feedback has now become a more positive helping hand.

From what you've said I can believe you have an adaptive mindset, and that's surely needed.
For me the important aspect here, and the most important person involved is your child. He cannot yet express what he feels and will rely on you totally. You will need to be sure to give an unflinching number 1 priority to him and to his well being.

Just be sure to have that plan B ready if needed.

Until then, good luck. There are a lot of active and experienced members only too willing to share all their experiences, the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Just be happy to take what you need and leave the rest. That's life.

Hi terpe - spot on my friend - if I did not have my son I would not even be on here and I would not be going to such a "safe" destination ha ha.

I am actually making this move for him. I want to dedicate some years to his young life and Davao and the cost of living seems the best place

There are so many things there and a life style that he can grow up with that will mean he will be able to adapt to most places in the world

We in the UK are so sheltered by the government that we have no idea how to evaluate risk and balance between fun and disaster

To all that contribute to help or hinder we all have an opinion and hopefully not one that can not be changed threw thoughtful input - thanks one and all

Mosside or Davao...a million times Davao...its also much nicer than altrincham with its wannabees...you will have gorgeous samal island a real tropical paradise and then mt apo and the suprisingly sophisticated city. It also has some very good schools and universities. Also misses the typhoons...what's not to like. It makes me jealous thinking about it.
Personally I would consider Davao has more potential than just about anywhere in bankrupt Britain
Of course the choice is yours, I would expect you to go through some cultural shock but I think it would be a great choice.
I have some friends in Davao so if you want some help with stuff let me know
Good luck

I am from Davao and my fiancee stayed for 5 months in my city. We also have friends with different races that are staying for good here. :)

I assure you that my city is a safe place, more cheaper than Cebu and manila when it comes to food and rent/property, loads of nice places to visit including Island Garden City of Samal and some mountain resorts. We also have wide variety of schools for your Son if he wishes to study here and clean, friendly, smoke free environment.

Like Stevek, I have many friends and contacts if you need help, just give us a shout. I hope you will enjoy Davao like other white does. Cheers!

Hi.

I have been to davao a few times as my wife is from there. Davao is a really nice place which makes you feel welcome and safe. i have visited a few other places in manila and nothing seems to compare to davao. as said above you are safe with weather there too. i have seen many good schools there but not only schools but communities which stick together and help eachother. anyway i think davao is a nice place and safe too i will be visiting there for many years to come
