History, dictates that woman are not capable of racing an F1 car. But history is wrong. Women can fly airliners and they could fly fast fighter jets too, if they didn't have wombs, which tend to come off in high ‘g' turns. I'm not making that up.

Nice set of wheels. Visited the TVR factory in Blackpool once. The owner at the time,Martin Lilley took me out in his Taimar.
A British icon. Are they still being made or has production transferred to China?

grahamw48
14th March 2012, 18:53
A clueless Russian bought the company and bankrupted it in 2006. :cwm23:

I met Martin Lilley at our car club meeting in Blackpool...2009. Nice Fella. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Here's a photo I took. He is pictured here....on the right in beige top and trousers....presenting prizes. :)

Great post Graham. Pangs of nostalgia.I had a series of Triumphs, a Stag and 2 Sprints. Used to enjoy Sunday afternoons touring round the empty byways of the Fylde coast. Ah memories. Drive a diesel Landcruiser now and stuck in traffic most of the time

I remember Martin Lilley's Taimar was a convertible with no windscreen just two small aero screens, certainly got the wind in your hair

Ah, another petrolhead. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

I've had sports cars of one sort or another since my early twenties. :)

Peter Wheeler bought TVR from Martin Lilley and ushered in the era of 'Wedges' (280i - 450 SEAC), of which I've now owned 5 different versions.

Peter died a couple of years ago, but shortly before that he was racing a brute of a 'M' Series car with a Nascar type Ford V8 in it.

Here's a video I shot when they were sound-testing it at our club meet in Blackpool:

TVR had a test driver,I recall he was an amateur rally driver, Tony Brunskill
Just googled him. he wont be doing any test driving for a while

Sat next to a guy a few years ago on Emirates from Manila to Gatwick
Played a few games of chess to while the hours away
He had a TVR Cerberra 3 litre. Had photos of club meets
I recall he had the reg C300 OCC spaced as C 3000CC
Interesting chat, that journey passed like a 2 hour hour bus run

grahamw48
16th March 2012, 11:00
If it was a Cerbera it would have been either a 4.2 (AJP) flat plane V8, a later 4.5 version of that engine, or 4 litre 'Speed 6' version...minimum 360bhp....max 420bhp.

The only TVRs that came with a 3 litre (Ford 'Essex' V6) were the Taimars, 'M' series and 3000S, which were all 1970s cars.

The first Cerberas were produced in 1995/96. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

tanga
16th March 2012, 17:05
Graham,
Must have been a speed 6. would be pre 93 or 94
On reflection C400 OCC
What was the model that featured in a John Travolta movie?

grahamw48
16th March 2012, 17:25
No, Speed 6s were the last engines produced (TVR's own)....but not to worry. :icon_lol:

....As in these: (Silver one is a T350, and one next to it is a Sagaris....taken on our run out to Whitby)

It was probably a 3000M or similar era...unless he was full of BS of course. :D

grahamw48
16th March 2012, 19:29
Talking of movies... and the Speed 6 engine...

This is the ACTUAL TVR Tuscan that was featured in the car chase in the movie 'Swordfish'. Here at my friend's house. The owner had just driven it over from Belgium on his way to a big meet at Blackpool. The car now has 600bhp. :cwm24:

My friend's car is the red 2.9 litre S series, which I helped to re-build, and in the garage is his dad's TVR Chimaera 4.5. :)

Swordfish yes that was the movie
Featured in rhd w the lancs registration also
The guy on the plane showed me a photo of his TVR
It was the reg plate and the way it was spaced that I remember
He gave me his contact details (pre email days)
Lived in Hartley Witney I recall
Great collection of snaps Graham thanks for posting
Watched a youtube series on the restoration of a TVR from Wheeler Dealers
Beats the hell out of daily coverage of the Senate Impeachment trial

grahamw48
17th March 2012, 11:33
I enjoy that Wheeler Dealers programme too.:xxgrinning--00xx3:

Actually the car they worked on in the programme was the same model as the one (my friend's) pictured below, with me doing a bit of 're-building'. :D In fact we re-built the whole car eventually from chassis up, along with upgrading a number of things.

Is it a Lotus7?
Just checked that TVR on Autotrader vehicle check

I must have a thing about reg plates!

grahamw48
18th March 2012, 11:01
Yes, Lotus 7...in newly re-built and concours condition (red).

Wish I'd kept it, AND the plate. :cwm3:

The present owner has contacted me concerning its history etc, so it's still being cherished. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

I like red cars. Here's my first TVR, a 280i FHC, chassis number 10 and ex TVR demonstrator....hence not registered until 3 years after it was built. I had it re-built, and also I had a red 390SE V8 model at the same time for those odd SUNNY days.

When i ws a kid i used to dream of owning a TVR but sadly the build quality was atrocious! Went the Germanic route and owned a couple of old Porsche 911's, the build quality of those being " bulletproof" but lacking in personality { what a suprise! } For 12 years i was in the Motor trade and got to drive a lot of Ferraris that my then boss dealt in but for sheer performance i loved the Nissan Skyline GTR, once had one for an afternoon, faster than the Ferrari 355 around the Nurburgring, what a machine!

grahamw48
19th March 2012, 00:30
The build-quality was fine on my 5 different TVRs....considering they were hand-built in small numbers, at not too big a price. All of my cars were over 20 years old too, and still delivering the goods for very low running costs.

Not many classic cars in daily use that could have that said about them. :)

The company I worked for for many years also owned a (sports and luxury) car showroom and I often went along to the 'top car' auctions and drove various vehicles back 'home'.

My best friend, a racing driver, had a string of exotic supercars, including a Ferrari 246 Dino, a Maserati Bora, De Tomaso Pantera, Ferrari 308GTB ...with factory Fibreglass body and reg No. 308GTB, plus a couple of Porsche 911 Turbos, one of which was a very special (930 ?) Flatnose in Guards Red and with major factory upgrades.

Always nice to ride down to the pub with him. :)

I've lots of friends in motorsport, with TVRs, Fezzas and Porsches etc.

Here's some of them last summer showing the continental cars the way home:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=1012570&mid=0&nmt=GT+Cup+TVR+Sagaris+wins+again
.
I like my TVRs (and Lotuses) because they're exclusive, BRITISH and I can tinker with them. They're also faster and better-sounding than most of the foreign mass-produced competition. :)

In their day both the racing versions of the Lotus 7 and the TVR SE were 'banned' from racing against their contemporaries because they were considered 'too fast'.

At least I haven't paid over a hundred grand to be humiliated....:D

I had a Ferrari 328GTS for just over a year. The performance was unbelievable as were the running costs. It went round hairpin bends like it was on rails.
It was great fun on weekends but I was happy to pass it on whilst my driving licence was still clean
