A paratrooper who was dragged through the military courts for hitting a Taliban suspect – in a case that cost more than £300,000 – was finally cleared yesterday.

The court martial suite at the HMS Nelson naval base in Portsmouth is a forbidding room. A place, for sure, that no soldier has any desire to become acquainted with.
Corporal C, an elite paratrooper, has somehow borne the humiliation with quiet dignity. This despite the fact that he has unquestionably been betrayed by the very hierarchy that should have protected him.
So why would the top brass betray in such a way a soldier who has won medals for his loyal service to Britain in battle? The inevitable answer? Political correctness.
