some really good pictures of a bygone age.

With all eyes on the Jubilee, these enchanting photographs give an insight into what life was like 60 years ago when our Queen came to the throne.

Nostalgia aint what it used to be.

There's always a danger in looking back, and forgetting just how bad things were as well as just how good.
For example, many people can't remember it raining when they were children - this is a common thing.

Those pictures are really lovely, no-one can disagree there, but many are them are very obviously staged - just as many pictures "nowadays" for magazines and news sites are staged.

Oh yes, let's have the picture of the old lady in the typical olde English village. We could just as easily have had a photo taken on a council estate, or in a still to be cleared slum.
Statistics prove that if you compare like for like, the crime rate in victorian times dwarfed that of today, and people were more likely to be victims of violent crime in particular.

So if we take the good with the bad. People were more healthy - no fast food crud and rationing still. Fewer cars so less pollution maybe? Crime rate lower? Not so sure, but possible. Different manners? Very possible - having a great part of a generation of men wiped out less than 10 years earlier certainly does things like that

Now - labour saving devices, women not restricted to domestic life, many more can afford cars, hundreds of tv channels, too easily accessed pornography, pubs all but closed down, people don't smoke so much now, but hard to afford to if you wanted to.

Back then you could literally leave an employer in the morning and be employed somewhere else in the afternoon (And this continued up into the 80's), no way can you do this now.

Hard really if you're pragmatic to decide if things were better or worse back in the day. I would say that if you were male and upper middle class, then things certainly could be better.

All I can say is - I'd hate to go back to the 80's when I was a teen :icon_lol: The second series of "Life on Mars" only reminded me just how crap it really was
