I have already been twice. Once when you could simply walk in - no fences. And once when the fence went up.....

Seems like we have to pay to see most things now when they were once free. I guess the money goes towards the upkeep etc etc. But often the prices can be so expensive and out of the range of some peoples pockets.

During public opening hours at Stonehenge you cannot walk up to the stones, the picture below depicts the closest you get to the stones during normal opening times.
English Heritage, the body that manage Stonehenge, allow small numbers to visit the monument outside normal visiting hours, this is called Stonehenge Special Access".
