Eden Hazard completed his move to Chelsea – and could not resist a dig at Manchester United.
Belgium play-maker Hazard, who has left Lille for the European champions in a £32 million deal, said the fact Chelsea had the “best project” helped him to snub United.
Hazard, 21, passed a medical yesterday and signed a five-year deal understood to be worth about £170,000 a week.
He said the prospect of regular football had also been a major factor in picking Chelsea. “I’ve always wanted to play in England,” he said.
“There was a struggle between Chelsea and United, but I believe Chelsea have the best project.
“When they won the Champions League I told myself, ‘why not Chelsea?’ The team is young and I have a better chance to play there.”
He added that former Chelsea star Joe Cole, a team-mate at Lille last season, played a part in his decision. “I spoke to Joe Cole and what he said above all was that Chelsea was the right club for me. As somebody who loves the club, he said he could really see me in the shirt. I’ll tell him he was right.”
Hazard was also courted by Real Madrid and Barcelona.
He is likely to be followed to Stamford Bridge by Porto’s £38m Brazil striker Hulk. Chelsea are also closing in on Ajax and Holland full-back Gregory van der Wiel.
