Tyres on jeepneys

I made a habit of looking at the spare tyres on jeepneys when I was over there this time for some reason.

I never noticed the actual tyres on the jeepneys themselves but the spare tyres were always bald and some had cracks in them. :cwm3:

Do they have a legal limit in the Phils or is it just ignored? :icon_lol:

Things seem to have improved. At one time pretty much standard to be driving on slicks with wires poking through on ALL the wheels....doesn't inspire confidence when they're gunning along at 50 in the peeing down rain. :omg:

As you'll know, lots of laws in the Phils, but many traffic violations are open to 'discussion' and spot 'fines' may be used instead. :)

My British cousin-in-law out there had a VW camper export (heavy duty) model and we often used to have to negotiate 'roads' like that down in Bicol.
It was far superior to any local vehicle and we never failed to get through.

I replaced both my rear tyres yesterday, even though the tread was good. The roads on the IOM here give the tyres some hammer and mine were well cracked.

BTW My boss popped a tyre on his car the other day. Cost for a replacement? £400. WOW

Look along pretty well any street and you will see signs saying "PAWNSHOP" and signs saying "VULCANIZING".

The number of "vulcanizing" establishments is directly related to the number of pawnshops, I think - people who cannot afford actual NEW tyres, or even actual decent retreads, must forever pay to have their worn tyres repaired, again and again - or they lose their livelihood.

Bald tyres are not illegal in the UK as a spare so i would have thought it was standard in the Philippines.
I have seem some very illegal vehicles and cargos over there, bald tyres in nothing. :icon_lol:

It was my understanding that if you had a spare tyre in your car when it went through the MOT test though, it had to be legal. :Erm:

I always leave mine at home anyway to get rid of the dead weight. - Just carry a can of tyre inflater and my AA card. :)

The spare tyre is not part of the MOT. You can have a bald tyre with wire hanging out or no spare at all. I lot of people like Graham carry a can.

On the subject of tyres. I learnt a few things a couple of days ago.

1] If I put nitrogen in the tyre instead of air it will take longer to deflate.

2] Tyres sold as part worn are now heavily regulated. (When I was younger I bought many a part worn tyre at the scrappy or otherwise)

I used to buy nearly the whole car from the scrapper when I was a yungun...like a blinkin toy shop it was. :icon_lol:
