Travelling within Europe

Hi,
Me and my husband is planning to have our holiday. I know that I need to get a visa for that...how long would it take to get one?
Another thing is, my mother in law would love to make me as her holiday partner, is it possible to get that visa/ or to travel within europe with other person like my mother in law instead of my husband?

For a Schengen visa, normally up to one week from the Embassy of the country you intend to enter first.

That visa is then good for all other Schengen countries.
