Hi.

I really would like to buy and send my girl in Cebu an android phone so we can use facebook and skype.

Just wondered if I bought one here and sent it to her if it would be compatible over there.

Thanks guys.

Why don't you just send her the money? Save on postage and time.

Yep send her the money. I recently bought my Tatay a new phone for fathers day and it was cheaper over there.

Thanks.

What have you guys found to be the easiest and safest way to send money there.

I heard of some people losing their money using western union.

I have always sent mine by Moneygram, possible from most post offices in the UK. Never let me down. But I think the fees aren't as cheap as they could be. I still use it, more out of habit than anything aswell as reliability.

Just adding info that might help... You can approximately see the cost of these phones at some trusted online shops, like Kim Store (via the Multiply site). Or ask if you can order one and just have it delivered to her home. Just giving another option hehe. :)

And yeah, if you buy it from there, make sure it's unlocked.

Oh and not meaning to offend anyone or something, just remember to send money to someone you really trust :P

Don't buy from places like Vodafone shop or Orange, as they won't just be locked, but will also have their branding and bloatware on them (Orange is especially bad for this).

I'm not recommending these shops, because I'm not a fan of them either, but Carphone Warehouse, and now Phones 4U sell phones in their original state, with original software on and they aren't locked (The former has never sold locked phones to my knowledge).
You'd need to buy a £10 topup, then it's good to go anywhere. Maybe a UK simcard could be useful over there?

Really though, are phones cheaper in Phils? So I'm going over soon - could I walk into a shopping mall and buy one £20 or more cheaper than in UK?

I bought a Samsung Galaxy Ace for my son from Phones 4 U and it was unlocked. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Indeedly.
A guy in Phones 4u told me that their phones were not locked "so I can use any sim in it".

Carphone Warehouse have apparently never sold locked phones, they arrive in their wonderful factory condition without branding. They however have never broadcast this, the reason being that the phone companies subsidise these phones so that customers will subscribe to their service.

Hence the same shops will sell a phone for say £110 with a £10 top-up and sim to Orange for example, but they will sell the exact same phone "sim free" for about £200.
Wonder how many people actually would buy it sim free, and wouldn't just chuck the sim card and save £££'s hehe

So Cheekee, have you met someone special already? It only seems a few weeks ago you came onto this forum introducing yourself etc. I hope it all works out!!!

I wouldn't send money .... way to early even if you trust her Cheekee :NoNo:

To be honest, there are so many phones in the philippines, from cheap chinese androids to the newest models. It's a nice gesture and all that, but if she wanted one, I am sure she could get hold of one without too much of a problem.
