Ministers are poised to abandon plans to introduce a new 80mph speed limit on Britain’s motorways amid fears the move could lead to more accidents.

I agree with this - 70 is plenty enough.
More often than not I bimble along at 58/60 irritating the road hogs, with a masinop (learnt that word here) eye on the fuel comp. Gonna head down the M4 for a couple of junctions later doing just that

I really don't see a problem with increasing the speed limit to 80.
When the 70mph limit was introduced cars were far less intelligent - no abs braking, radar guided cruise control and 5 star crash testing etc.
I drive a lot of miles a year and spend so much time in 50mph contra flows so being legally allowed to do 80 would make a difference and make up for lost time in traffic.
I agree speed can cause accidents but it isn't speed more like the idiot behind the wheel who can't control his car.
We need to ban phones in the front of a car first though!

I'm same as Dedworth, quite happy on motoways at 60mph. I don,t think the accident problems are mainly caused by speed, rather caused by distance between vehicles!:Erm:

1. Ban white vans and women drivers = equals number of vehicles and bad drivers on road halved.
2. Increase speed limit to 100mph on motorways.:drivingx:
.
Can't beat doing 200mph for learning anticipation though. :)
