Following on from another recent thread about tattoos and the pro's and con's.. Do you have one? why did you get it? what does it represent to you?

I have decided to have one, I have created my design, it has meaning to me and will be a work of art when finished. My tattoo represents my family in the form of a Chinese Koi scene. Each fish represents my myself my wife and growing family. In Chinese tradition, the Koi is the strongest of fish. It will persevere in it's quest to swim upstream to spawn often against incredible currents and odds. It is said that if a Koi can swim it's way up and over a steep waterfall it will change into a magnificent Dragon, the most revered of Chinese folk law creatures. It echos my life and my journey to where I am now and how proud I am of my family.
Below are the first two stages of my journey, the initial sketch, to a more detailed sketch by the artist that she did for me to see colours and more details. I will continue to post more photos until the final tattoo is completed.

I only get henna tattoos, so I won't have regrets just in case I don't want it anymore as it only stays for 2 weeks. And it's just a fun thing to do whenever we go to beaches. Below are some of the henna tattoos I got over the years..one photo was with my officemates showing their own henna tattoos..the last photo was supposed to be an ambigram of RAYNA but the tattoo artist made a crap out of it and ended up looking as "RAY" and an overturned "RAY"! :doh

That's exactly how it is in Japan, Steve, with Koi tattoo's. I guess that actually comes from China

A Koi transforming into a dragon symbolizes courage in overcoming adversity or personal struggle in determination to achieve one's dreams.
It's very popular in Japan to have a small discreet tattoo of a golden Koi after some special moment in life.

The large or conspicious tattoo's are still associated with Yakuza. (Apart from the extreme high price needed to have it done by hand)

I don't have one.
But like you, I never say never about anything.

I am guessing so Stewart, outlines are first then they fill in after. So 4 x 4 hour sessions, it will also depend on the 'pain' factor and how long I can stand it. But I think my pain threshold is high enough or I might scream like a little girl :icon_lol:

Yes, I have seen some horrors like that where people have wanted a Chinese script for example, but ended up with complete rubbish or insults :icon_lol:

I haven't got it yet, but will do sometime soon. I've always wanted something to do with Kent on my arms, but never fully decided what to have. I wanted the Kent Horse, but with it being white it would be a bit boring, so then went for the option of having it in a shield in the middle of a Celtic design, but then looked set on having the words Invicta and Cantiaci written up both arms. Now I finally have my final choice, I can go back the the horse, and have the pinoy sun to go with it too. We had this design at our wedding, so it means a lot to us both, so seems perfect to have this

I am actually surprised how this thread has taken off. It appears many of us have tattoos (or will have in my case). I guess we do not see them as some would say 'tramp stamps' but as rememberances of special moments or people in our lives.

I do find that they are very personal, and for the high visible ones I believe they are a statement, whether thats rebellious, individuality, attention seeking or just a sheer passion for art.
I can certainly admire a beautiful tattoo on a beautiful female body, but thats where my interest ends. :-)

Last night I went for my first session with Ting. I have been quite anxious about it for weeks and I have been trying to imagine the senssation of being 'inked' Well... last night was a real eye opener. I arrived after work to the studio and Ting showed me to the chair. I removed my shirt and Ting showed me all the equipment, all sterile, in date and clean. She then shaved my back a little, I am not that hairy really, and then she cleaned me. This was nice. Ting then made my back wet with something and she placed the cut out images from our design on my back to give the outlines.
Next thing I know is this stinging pain like she is cutting my skin with a red hot knife. Ting started in the side of my back which I found quite painful, as shetattooed the outlines my toes were curling and my muscles were tencing with the pain. But I was able to carry on and she moved from the side to the top of my back to spread the pain a little.
After about and hour and a half the outlines were pretty much done and we had a break. I was relieved at this short recess, but to be honest after the needles have stopped, there is no pain at all, it is only when the needles are working you feel the pain.

Anyway, ten minutes later we were going again. Ting was now shading some of the tattoo which wasn't so bad as the outlines. I looked around to see what she was doing and now she was shading in with the first colour, red. The finished colour will be towards orange, (see last post I made with photos) so there is more colouring to be done yet. Another hour and a half later and my first session is over. I am relieved.

I was a little bit aprehensive because of the night before, but I can't turn back now. As I walked in I was greeted by Dyaln, co-owner of www.shanghaitattoo.com (http://www.shanghaitattoo.com/) who said I looked nervous (he was right too) but he made me feel at ease.

Ting showed me to the couch and prepared her tools and applied the sketch as before and when she was ready to go, I laid down and she started her craft.
For me, the most painful part are the outlines, and as they become closer to the sides of your back the pain increases. I found though that at the base of my spine I could have lasted all day. Funny how that happens, I guess not so many nerve endings, but on my sides, even when Ting was freehand drawing on me I was jumping.

Below are a a few photos showing Ting's work so far. I go for sessions 3 and 4 on the 21st and 22nd March so I will update then. I hope you are enjoying the posts so far. I am now excited about seeing the finished work of art.

Might not cost as much as you think. There's a tattoo place in my town for example, and he has branched out and bought a laser removal machine. He charges £40 a pop, if they are self made ones, then one application is pretty likely to remove them. Professional ones probably more like six applications, but they have to be spaced out so time to save inbetween............if they are REALLY annoying you now.

Lot more expensive to remove though, and a lot more painful

Oh and for goodness sake, anyone having those henna tattoos done, do be careful. If they are black, then there's a good chance it contains a compound which can cause burning and scarring. The internet is full of stories of people having them done on the Costa Del Cockroach, then forever they have a scar.

Well.... now, after the first two sessions it feels exactly the same as sunburn. I cant describe it in any other way. It does not hurt as such, but if I sit against the sofa it is a little sore, but again, like sunburn. Actually laying there while it is being done feels like you are being cut with a red hot knife, but (and I guess it is down to the skill of the artist) the strokes that Ting makes are generally quite short so it is a sharp pain for a few seconds each time. The shading in is easier to take as there are more needles being used at a time and not as deep as the outline. To be honest it has been quite an experience, and I have tried to describe the sensation of it the best I can so others can make their own decisions on whether they ever have one done. I actually feel quite proud of my tattoo already even though not completed yet and also proud of myself for the stamina on such a big tattoo.

It's now 5 days since I had my first tattoo session and all is ok. But for the last few days my back has become really itchy as the skin over the tattooed area has been peeling off. It is just like after you have had sunburn and the skin is peeling, the same sensation. I am still keeping it moisturised as guided, but I just want to scratch it, but cant. :cwm3:

You're welcome. I have a small tattoo but picked the worst (and most painful) part of my body for my first one. I have one done on my pelvis. I can feel my whole pelvic bone buzzing in pain. I remember slapping the tattooist face the moment the needle touched my skin! But oh well, no turning back now.

Plenty of awesome artists in and around south of England being as you are in Berkshire, you may have to travel a little bit to find the right artist though.

I have a design. Ladies face, a bit tribal, and some florals. Not too flowy feminine, and not too masculine sharp edges as well. I'm scared of picking the wrong artist and make my lady design looking cross-eyed. Hope not.
