Electric ‘tuk-tuk’ for Philippines

Tokyo-based start-up company Terra Motors has unveiled an electric tricycle (more commonly known as a ‘tuk-tuk’) designed for the Philippines market. Its ‘e-tricycle’ is powered by a lithium-ion battery and can accommodate five passengers. Just under 11ft long and steered by handlebars, it can travel some 31 miles on a 2hr charge, according to the firm.

These have been around already for awhile - You can see some going around in Fort Bonifacio. The Asian Development Bank is also rolling out a few hundred thousand more units for various places around the country - they already have some in Ortigas.

My personal opinion of them is that they're a pretty expensive investment, yet a merely a 'drop in the bucket' in terms of cutting back of air pollution. I believe it would be far more cost-effective to create incentives for the millions of trike drivers in the country to instead just upgrade their 2-stroke trikes into 4-stroke trikes, which are already much more fuel efficient and clean-burning. They did this in the City of San Fernando, La Union, relatively easily, and the air there is now much better. It's an issue of scale: Upgrading 1,000,000 trikes to 4-stroke motors will benefit the air a lot more than just buying 100,000 new e-trikes would, but both would probably be the same price! - I discussed this once with one of the managers in the Department of Energy, but they were far more interested in just pushing this e-trike technology with ADB money!

Of course, the trikes are only half the issue either way. The Jeepneys are the really terrible emitters! Jeepneys are the main reason why every medium/large Philippine city has lethal air quality! I'm sure a day in Manila is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes.. haha :bigcry:
