Jabs!

Hi,

Am just looking for some advice re innoculations/jabs etc

Which ones will I need and how much are they?

Doesn't seem to be anything definitive on the internet beyond Hep A & B

Be good to hear from some fellow travellers who've had jabs.

Hepititus A/B are fine and free at your local surgery, I first had mine 12 years ago and followed up with a booster 3 years ago!:xxgrinning--00xx3:

Yup. Free of charge. Had my boosts in 2010.

All you have to pay for is malaria tablets and mozzy repellent.

May I suggest that you read the health checklists on the Health Issues section of the forum * . The links given on those threads will take you to the most up to date advice.


There is no such thing as risk free travel, and comprehensive insurance may only cover you if you have taken the relevant health precautions, which don’t just include “ jabs “.



Each traveller should assess their own risks which include


• Destinations to be visited – countries in addition to the Philippines ; which areas of the Philippines ; duration of stay ; intended activities ; and type of accommodation.


• Age, sex, current health status.


• A visit to your own doctor, who should have your health and vaccination record ( or travel health clinic ), 6 – 8 weeks before travel. This will allow time for “ jabs “ and tablets if needed.


Assessment by your doctor is free under the NHS, as are certain “ jabs “ - but you will need to pay for antimalarial tablets ( around £ 40 “ over the counter “ or with a paid-for private prescription from your doctor ) and vaccinations such as those for hepatitis B ( £ 30 ) or rabies ( £ 120-150 for a course ), since they are not routinely needed for protection of people living in the UK. Many visitors to the Philippines decide not to take malaria tablets ; vaccines are not routinely given for Hep B, rabies, cholera ( £ 30 ), or Japanese encephalitis ( £ 60 ) - because the risk is too low ( but may exist ). Combined Hep A / B and Hep A / Typhoid vaccines may be freely available – take advice. The country has almost certainly been polio-free for over a decade.



Please note that there are as yet NO “ jabs “ available ( except in research settings ) for malaria, dengue, chikungunya ( all mosquito-borne ) ; or HIV/AIDS.
