Paula White was due to host a final three hour show after six years as BBC Radio Stoke's afternoon presenter.
But the DJ's last stint before a switch to a Saturday slot ended after slurring her way through half an hour on air.
When a listener sent a text message to producers suggesting she was drunk Ms White giggled: "I’m not drunk, I’m not drunk. I’ve had a couple of drinks. I’m not drunk."
She started her show at 1pm on Friday by saying: "For the last time on lunchtime let's ssssssssssay you pick the music."
Inviting readers to send in their playlist requests later, she said: "Start your messages with?.?.?. Stoke? Yes, start it with Stoke. I don’t care. Whatever you want to hear this afternoon, it’s like you can hear it."
Returning from her first song, she said: "It’s a P-A-R-T-Y because I ssssaid sooooo?.?.?. Some people will say, 'Oh, thank goodness she’s gone.'"
"Other people will go, 'How will I get the dog to sleep?' because I know that people play this show out for their dogs. How lovely."
She threw out the playlist, commenting: "Let's just throw it all out. I don't get told what songs to... No, I do get told what songs to play. But I don't get told what songs to play, ugh, on the last day of mmmyyyyy show."
At one stage she tried to play Katrina and the Waves' Walking On Sunshine but played a jingle instead.
After she had stumbled through 30 minutes colleague Dan Siegertsz took over and finished the show, saying: "Paula is not feeling well and has gone home."
Eric Potter commented on Radio Stoke's Facebook page: "Very surprised and upset by Paula Whites unprofessional behaviour and the lack of respect shown by her to her employers Radio Stoke, and all her listeners on her afternoon show on Friday."
A BBC spokesperson said: "Paula White was unable to continue on-air as she was under par."
