AUSTRALIAN boat race protester Trenton Oldfield has been refused leave to remain in the UK after the Home Office decided his presence was not "conducive to the public good".

The former Sydneysider, who disrupted last year's University Boat Race by swimming into the path of the crews, was jailed for six months for his actions.

Oldfield, who was watched by millions of television viewers as he halted the annual race on the Thames between Oxford and Cambridge universities, was found guilty at London's Isleworth Crown Court of causing a public nuisance.

During his trial, Oldfield told the jury the race was a symbol of elitism and that London was blighted by inequality.

A Home Office spokesman said on Sunday: "Those who come to the UK must abide by our laws.

"We refused this individual leave to remain because we do not believe his presence in this country is conducive to the public good."

They should have him cuffed and on a plane not "told to leave" thus allowing him to milk publicity and start lengthy human rights actions

It's a shame they don't adopt the same attitude with many 1000's more whose presence is not conducive to the public good .

Name me any race that isn't a sign of elitism, that's the whole point. All races or sports are blighted by inequality or they'd all end up in a draw.

Looks like I'm going to be odds with the comments here.

I personally don't know anything about this guy. Maybe there's some deep dark secret we don't about.
But look, he's married to a British Citizen (due to give birth today - according to reports) and has lived here for 10 years.
If he's of previous good character what's the reason to deport him? Just because he made a protest? Or is there something else? I don't know but it just seems peculiar to deport him and yet no attempt is made to deport those folks who are known to be a threat to national security or whose presence is not considered 'conducive to the public good'.

I'm not saying who's right or wrong.

Just expressing my personal disbelief.

How many thousands of violent criminals under UK visa's are still walking around freely to repeat their crimes.

As per a story posted in the forum today about a guy who repeatedly beat up his kids and is now out of prison and allowed to stay here and put his kids and others at risk.

I'll say no more, but something's not correct about this imo

IMO Because the Boat Race is a British Institution supported by millions every year. Having elite universities is critical to be a leading Western nation (OK, so maybe they are not as elite as they used to be). Of course he has the right to protest, but then if he gets a criminal record he stands a big chance of forfeiting his Leave To Remain.

Couldn't agree more on that, just wondered why others with much more serious records don't get deported.

You really have to question the judicial system when someone like the evil serial child molester Stuart Hall only receives 9 months more in prison than this guy. :Erm::mad: Actually Oldfield shouldn't be in prison at all.


Seems like this country thinks a boat race is more important than children's welfare.
