once Ems has achieved this and has her british passport, do you think it may be easy for her sister or niece to visit us or would it make no difference at all,

That's if you have the additional funds required to support the applicant. When I applied for mother in law the application wasn't too dissimilar to the questions asked in the spouse visa. Requirements just the same..only difference being was cost.
