It seems that the flight to Bacolod earlier this year was responsible for the demise of my ten year old Canon Powershot so instead of getting this ageing 3.2 MP camera repaired I decided to buy a new one. On the cheap of course. :biggrin:

After seeing the quality of a friend's Panasonic Lumix I decided to check out the reviews of various inexpensive models made by Panasonic.

In the end I plumped for the Lumix DMC S5 which has 16.1 megapixels and HD video amongst its specs. It's about the size and weight of a standard mobile phone just a bit chunkier - and there's no need to buy batteries as it's chargeable. Documentation states that 280 photo's can be snapped before recharging the battery too. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Same here, but it is about 10 years old... It uses rechargeable batteries but they don't last long at all....

I like the idea of a chargeable camera as opposed to chargeable batteries!

I've got a Nikon something or other.

I found it more convenient to use normal re-chargeable batteries, because I used to use it a lot for my work, so could just change to a fresh set of re-chargeables (which I always had with me) in a few seconds, rather than losing use of the camera while it was re-charged.

Anyway Jamie, sounds like a nice camera you've got there at a bargain price.

I have a NIKON Coolpix S3300 and a 2 year old Nikon D3100. Both of them are good cameras but I suppose a compact is more easy for you to carry and all specially if your on a trip.

I am so fed up of cameras breaking down after so little amount of knocks I would suggest buying an Olympus tough 8010 if you can get one. My own choice s a second hand Leica D-lu 3 bought on Ebay in a case. Gosh this is about 7 yrs old and its tough and sharp. The metering system indoors suggests a company that has got it right. A bit of a snobs choice is Leica but it stays with you as reliable. Is there any drawbacks with the Leica D-lu 3 well yes. First it needs about 5 seconds rest between one photo and the next. Second I cant think of one. Now the big benefits - it can shoot in RAW & Jpeg at the same time. This is a massive asset as your photos in Jpeg lose pixels every time you view them however the raw image is always there forever and can be edited into a Jpeg. Its also a better more detailed recording.

try a camera shop and ask them for there advice, i always go into the london camera exchange, they have shops in a few places and are very knowledgeably and always ask for a deal too
