being ex navy I find reading this very depressing indeed .what the hell are we doing paying 260 captains over a 100 grand a year with only 19 working warships what a complete and utter waste of public money .more to the point the tory goverment destroying the once biggest navy in the world to a mere skelaton of its former self utter shamefull :cwm23:

Wait until we get these multi-billion carriers... we have no battle group to support them :doh

Talk about more chiefs than indians.
You are right Tiger a shameful decline of a mighty Navy that once ruled the waves.
I've given up watching those fly on the wall documentaries about Navy ships. The state of todays Navy was summed up to me on one of them with some of the female crew having to have risk assessment/counseling before & after they recovered the body of an Indonesian fisherman. Also that disgusting episode a few years ago when they surrendered to a bunch of Iranians
Depressing

Very sad.
My dad was in the RN for 30 years, and we were so proud of him and the Senior Service.

You are clear for take-off: Cormorant feels the need for speed and runs along the flight deck of HMS Illustrious as it patrols the gulf

Dad joined the RN in 1938, aged 15.
The last ship he served on was the carrier HMS Centaur (early 60s). He then went to Malta, and then on to the Admiralty before retirement from the RN. He then worked as a civilian instructor...later heading up the dept, at the Army Apprentices college.
Here's a lovely video related to HMS Centaur...and very much 'of its time'.
I can relate to it also, as we visited Aden (Yemen) in 1958.

Interesting article. I was onboard the HMS Illustrious last night for a cocktail party, I believe that it's her last overseas voyage before being retired.
A proud ship without any planes sadly.

thats right and queen elizabeth won,t be ready until 2016 at the earliest so no aircraft carrier until then what a joke .we only have a helicopter carrier not a lot of good if the argintines fancy their luck again
