Thats the downside of short term memory isnt it - what is good for an individual may not be for the good of the country, and that seems to be labours way of keeping voters happy at any cost..

Back onto the actual topic it boils my blood at how many loan companies exists - log book loans was quite a strange one - borrow against a depreciating asset - oh great idea! :NoNo:

About time these robbing bullying leeches were stopped.

I won't have to do as much swearing at the TV either.

Arthur Little

Whilst I appreciate a mortgage is, to all intents and purposes, a loan and - in the VAST majority of cases - a necessary one, in order to purchase a house ... I do feel there are far, far too many people who take out loans for items that are either unnecessary, or perhaps for a commodity they could easily enough buy outright.

Car Loans, for example, are BIG business; my brother (now retired) was a Branch Manager of such an enterprise ... and, unfortunately, all too often, customers' failure to keep up with their repayments led to their vehicles being repossessed by the Company. :doh

Hire Purchase is "as old as the hills" (to coin a phrase) but nowadays seems to be endemic ... out of all proportion, so much so, that debt levels are at an all-time high - constantly spiralling out of control - thereby causing untold misery :bigcry: to millions of families who, if truth be told, can ill~afford to "splash out" a small fortune :REGamblMoney01HL1: on luxury goods in the first place.

Arthur Little
28th November 2013, 03:32
:olddude: ... without meaning to appear in ANY way complacent, my personal advice is as follows:

"Never a Borrower nor a Lender be" :nono-1-1: ... unless an article is truly affordable - one ought to seriously question the need for it - in other words, "cut one's cloth according to one's budget"!

tone
28th November 2013, 09:35
Thats fair advice Arthur! Unfortunately greed, impatience and the "instant" everything we have in society today means we tend to get roped into the "I want or need it now" especially around the ease to obtain credit. But these :Sex: take the biscuit with outrageous interest rates!

Having been at both ends of the debt scale I know where I would rather be!

Cheers
Tone

I agree Tone, as a young man, even though I was earning a lot of money at the time, the 'instant gratification' bug meant that I always spent more than I earned due to the availability of easy credit.

Additionally, I was selling credit to others as part of my work.

In the end it is up to the individual to manage their finances properly, but of course people have weaknesses, and there will always be those around ready to exploit them.

These payday loans have taken this exploitation to an entirely new level though...to the point of treating 'clients' as helpless prey. :NoNo:

These days, as with Arthur, if I haven't got the money to pay cash, I don't buy it...and that includes cars.
If people choose to judge me on what possessions I have, well that's their problem not mine. At least everything I do own is paid for, I haven't been overdrawn one penny for at least the past 10 years, and I can live a fairly stress-free life.

How true that is! The only individuals this government is interested in are the rich. Back on the topic these loan sharks need addressing the rate needs to be brought more in line with the banks interest rate. These loans have been about for a long time.

As far as cigs go....just ban them totally. Yes there'd be a bit of a black market (already is anyway for the smuggled ones), but most would thank them for it.

Professor Mike Kelly, Director of the NICE Centre for Public Health commented: “Smoking is the most important health problem facing the NHS. It’s the leading cause of premature death in England – nearly 80,000 lives are lost each year due to smoking. Treating smoking-related illnesses costs the NHS around £2.7bn each year, and costs society an estimated £13.7bn a year. So it’s a no brainer: we must deal with the problems caused by smoking.”

I wonder how many of those in debt to Wonga outfits combine that money with their benefit payments to buy such essentials as 64 inch Samsung TVs , I Phones, X Boxes etc.

If you really need the Benefit, then you should get it, if you have made up a spurious claim then you should not receive it-that makes sense to me.

There has been plenty of cases over the years and again I have picked some of these so called unable to work crowd who don't seem to have any problem going on the piss all day.
