I thought hard before donating about a month's income to the DEC fund. I have investigated charities in the UK so have a reasonable grasp of how funds get diverted, and in most cases, knowing what I know, I would not donate, nevertheless, I went ahead and sent the funds. After all, if we with our connections in Phil do not help, why should we expect others to do so?

I had similar concerns in the Tsunami appeal in 2004. However I am a Hash House Harrier (sort of international running club) and eventually donated to an appeal run by a member who reported back over the following year or so, on how the money was spent. Thus I was pretty satisfied my funds did the good I had hoped for.

In this case, I really hope (but I will not hold my breath) that the International Powers who contributed, will take action to ensure all the funds help those who need it.

My wifes family in Tacloban and Basey Samar have been telling us they are getting relief goods of rice not fit for pigs to eat that smells and tins of sardines. They are absolutely sick of sardines. Not sure whats happening to the real aid but its probably being diverted to warehouses somewhere. The folk that need it certainly are not getting it.

I have written to my MP last week complaining about aid not getting to those needing it and asking if the government can add pressure to the phil govermnent via the international community to do something about it.

Its still VERY dangerous there and the wifes family have already risked a journey to Cebu to try and buy/bring back food they can actually eat. Its either that or starve and of course all goods are ay inflated prices.

The top photo in the mail article is of "ready to eat " food supplied to USA soldiers thats being resold in Manilla....and not relief foods.
