I was flying to Manila from Heathrow 3 weeks ago and looked up at departure board and saw manila listed.

I had to double take several times to make sure I wasn't dreaming lol

I didn't quite work out which airline was running the direct flight does anyone have an idea?

But I searched goggle and found a newspaper report that Philippines airline resumes direct flights to manila from November after lengthy ban in Europe due to slack safety standards.

Yes, it's Philippine Airlines. It's been a hot topic on here for awhile now. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Yup, Philippine Airlines, operating out of Terminal 4 at LHR. Looking forward to our trip on 23rd (well as much as you can look forward to a 14+ hour flight...)

Looks like a nice new leased 777ER, hopefully not yet subject to a poor maintenance record  3 days until our departure.

Trip report.

The flight left LHR an hour late, but the incoming flight was also late and the weather was very wet and windy so I expected this.

We had exit seats (paid for), but in general the seats/cabin were OK. Not great, not bad. A bit more seat width would have been nice (I'm not fat). Economy class was full, business class was empty except for a few seats which people paid for upgrades to. Strange that PAL only had 5 business seats for sale at departure.

I didn't eat anything or pay any attention to the food service as i slept for a big chunk of the flight, but Rose tells me the food was 'OK but it wasn't hot'. 5:30 departure, they served the first meal around 7:30, then another big meal at midnight and turned all the lights on waking everyone, why? Breakfast came around 2hrs before landing.

The cabin crew were average, certainly not Virgin/Cathay/Singapore service. I would compare them to Emirates for personal attention/service.

So, a good way to save a few hours on the LHR-MNL route, but nothing exceptionally good or bad to say.

Flight time was 13hrs 40mins outbound.

An extra flight meal compared to Cathay! What was the grub like? Longannisa for breakfast?

Will probably fly with PAL next time if prices are around the £600 mark.

We used PAL Cebu - Heathrow in November (their 2nd flight since resuming ) ,we were very lucky had the plane almost to ourselves (68 passengers) so service was great.Good entertainment choice ,food was good enough cost was definitely good compared to all the other carriers for one way flights.

I looked for May. Cathay pacific £580ish PAL £780ish. For £200 cheaper I can cope with a transfer with 90 minutes transfer time

Not always. Had to wait five hours in HK on the return trip in November.

thats because they have more than 1 flight a day ,there is only 55 minute lay over in h.k if you book the 8.pm flight from cebu to hongkong .The lunchtime flight from heathrow will give you 90 minutes wait in h.k to cebu unless there is a delay for some reason.

Return flight report:

- Cluck me, that was a long one. 15hrs 45mins. Again, saved by the fact that we had exit row seats.
- The crew was a bit better this time, but I still don't think they treat the passengers as customers who'm they wish to have a great experience. Just punters there to be served.
- My seat-TV didn't work (it kept rebooting) - we had TV problems on the outbound leg too - not a good sign. I had my iPad with stuff loaded to watch/read and PAL gave me an iPad of theirs with more movies on so I was well entertained.
- Boarding was fine, slight delay but no biggie. Baggage was the usual LHR, OK-ish.

I do get fed up of being charged to leave the country though (terminal fee), and then charged for Rose to leave as she is not an OFW and does not have permanent UK residence yet (1620 Pesos!).

So, if your wife enters the Philippines on a UK passport she does not have to pay the P1620??

I had the same layover time from Heathrow to Clark at HK, meaning I had my own personal escort between the connecting flights. Would have never caught the Clark flight without one as we had to use the train.

Just a little feedback from me... both flight late... IFE rubbish compared to most good airlines... Good seats and service was so-so... the person i was sat next to (a cabbie) was refused service for drinks as they thought he was drinking everything himself when we were 50/50..

No many drinks services for a long flight..

Overall ok.. flew back on Jan 1 into LHR flight was late and made me miss my train to York and cost me over £115 in extra charges.. flying with QR next time.

Complained to PAL and never got a reply apart from an automated one - overall disappointed, once they start from CDG I will take a promo (as it will be cheap)

My wife didn't pay the exit tax holding a filipino passport. ..although she had the ILR at the time.

for me i think that long on a plane is too long, i dont sleep on flights and really there is not enough room in the seats , so i am happy paying for the two flights, but who knows, we may give it a try if the price is right
