The best tool any multimedia journalist or video blogger can have is a still camera that can take great video too. A camera that has a flip out screen and an external microphone port - features thankfully included in the NX30, the newest camera in Samsung's NX line.

Announced as part of Samsung's pre-CES 2014 rollout, the NX30 is a mirrorless camera designed for semi-professionals. Samsung calls it a compact system camera, which is apt considering all NX cameras come with ultra-compact bodies.

The device measures 127mm x 95.5mm x 41.7mm about half the size of the swizel screen Canon 70D.

The camera has a 20.3MP APS-C sensor and can capture images at 1/8000 of a second and 9 frames per second on burst mode. It can shoot images from ISO 100 to ISO 25600 with Samsung’s DRIMeIV Image Processor working behind the scenes. Also worth noting, the camera supports Samsung’s line of lenses including the 45mm 2D/3D prime lens it announced at CES last year.

Unlike the Galaxy NX the NX30 comes with a 3-inch Super AMOLED swivel display and touch screen making it easier to capture shots from weird angles, and to shoot yourself when you need to speak to the camera.

It supports standard 3.5 mm microphones, great if you need to do voice overs or annotations and would rather speak into a microphone instead of talking over a noisy environment. The camera can shoot Full HD video and also supports HDMI live streaming.

We’re also happy to see that this ultra compact includes a built-in, tillable viewfinder addressing one of our biggest complaints about its big brother the NX300 and many other ultra compacts these days.

Like the just announced Samsung Galaxy Camera 2, the NX30 also has a host of connectivity options including WiFi and Samsung’s new Tag & Go function for transferring photos via NFC. In some regions the camera includes functionality that allows users to upload photos directly to cloud storage service Dropbox and/or photo sharing site Flickr. Adobe Lightroom 5 is also bundled.

Along with the NX30 Samsung also introduced its line S line of premium lenses including a 16-50mm F 2-2.8 S ED OIS lens and a 16-50 F3.5-5.6 Power Zoom ED OI Lens.

Samsung is mum on pricing and availability for now but Rappler Tech will try and provide you with a hands-on report (maybe even shot on an NX30) when we cover CES 2014 next week
