View Full Version : Am I mad?

Been a fairly busy week and it's only Wednesday.
Good news first, Shey had her 20 week scan and we're having a baby girl :Jump:
Bad news, 2 hours before the scan I was told that I'm being made redundant :Help1: Not just me but the holding company that owns us are shutting our company. Had a meeting with the financial director and put a proposition to him that I would continue to work for the holding company, but from home. This is being thought about, and should know next week.
Meanwhile, fast forward to this morning and I have a meeting with my director (he's being made redundant as well), and we're now in negotiations to buy the company between us :Erm:
It's either a stroke of genius or pure insanity. No job and 5 month pregnant partner Monday lunchtime to potential MD of a company that's currently losing money 48 hours later.
Wish me luck :cwm25:

I'll be the first
Good luck :xxgrinning--00xx3:
I'm feeling "am I mad" in some dealings I've got going on with a Belgian supplier at present. Spent all morning phoning and jumping up & down about some goods they repeatedly tell me are scheduled for 26 Feb and just now the warehouse tell me pallet arrived at 10am today

You're not going mad Simon. You're only doing what you think is best. Congratulations on the coming birth of your child.
I'll give you some rep in hope it gives you some cheer :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Great news on the baby.
Sometimes when opportunities present themselves in life, you have to take them, life is for living and fortune favours the brave! I have always believed in taking carefully considered risks to move forward.
I am sure your new life as your own boss will give you new motivation.

Whilst I am pleased to read about the outcome of Shey's 20-weeks' pregnancy scan, Simon ... I'm sorry to learn this :BouncyHappy: news has been overshadowed by the inopportune prospect of your redundancy. :bigcry:
:yeahthat:'s the last thing you need at this juncture! :doh And no, you're NOT going mad :nono-1-1: ... much the same thing happened to me - albeit away back in early 1969 - when my late first wife was expecting our daughter.
Luckily, at age 24 :cwm24: - when called into my manager's office on a bleak, cold January morning (also a Monday) to be informed that my services would no longer be required following a MASSIVE, unwelcome shake~up throughout the organisation I worked for - I soon found alternative employment at a time when jobs were a great deal more plentiful.
You, on the other hand, possess a wealth of experience - which, I'm reasonably confident, is bound to be invaluable in seeking a similar (if not better) opening in your specialist field of expertise. And/or being your own boss should the opportunity you mention come to fruition!
All the very best of luck to you. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Good luck to you Simon. :xxgrinning--00xx3:
I hope at this point, and given the awful news reports recently, you will also give some careful thought about having a helpless baby in the same house as a dog.
Sorry, but it has to be said.

No need to be sorry Graham, my best mate Dave the dog has already found a new home and I miss him like crazy, but as you you correctly point out, you can never be too careful.

Thank you Arthur, to be quite honest I'm really looking forward to the challenges ahead. As I've just discussed with Shey, we have 2 options, this time next year we're either retired in the Philippines or we're very comfortable here

Thanks Ricky, as you correctly say, nothing ventured nothing gained! I can either be like my current colleagues and be dejected or I can turn a bad situation into one that works to my advantage. I fully intend to make this turn of events make me a better person and put me in a position to provide a better life for my daughter
This time next year.............

plenty of people have succeeded in turning a business around I hope you will do the same .There is no better feeling than being your own boss ,been there done that although a lot more headaches to contend with ,but in the end its worth it. what type of business is it ? and are you confident of turning it around ?

Wouldn't even be thinking of it unless I was confident that it could generate a decent income
The business is mainly supplying industrial pipeline and heating equipment to facility management companies and government bodies.

Sincere best wishes for the future Simon.
Rosie has beaten me to it but worth repeating "as one door closes, another one opens".
I've always believed in that and always positively pushed for it.
Glad to learn all is going great for Shey and the baby. :Jump:
Good luck

At the risk of sounding too traditional......do make sure "the numbers" go in the right way.
I'm a strong believer in a detailed Business Plan and detailed Financial Analysis.

Hi Terpe, thanks for your words of advice :xxgrinning--00xx3:
With another member of the family on the way, and (as with us all) my extended family in the Philippines I'm going into this with my eyes wide open
