One word leaps out of Philip Clarke's statement in Tesco's annual results - "sharper". He is talking about pricing but he is careful not to use the word "lower".

.....A chilling statistic from a Retail Week survey yesterday was that 45% of 2,000 adults questioned thought that Tesco's prices had gone up in the last year.
Only 13% thought they had come down. Aldi and Lidl are likely to be laughing up their collective, nicely tailored German sleeves at that answer.
The question investors will be asking is "has Philip Clarke grasped the nettle" on the fundamentally changing retail market?...

Personally I like shopping at Morrisons, don't get me wrong I find some of their prices quite expensive compared to same products at pound shops so the reason I hit Morrissons is the BOGOF offers especially on the products we use most and can be stored and kept for a long time, like Tesco says "Every little helps"...

I agree. Tesco are a bunch of rip-off con-artists with their (ever-increasing) prices, and I might add, displaying the usual modern-day totally cynical attitude towards customers...who are now merely people to be manipulated, bamboozled and have money extracted from without care or conscience.
How about some 'fuel discount' for those of us who are helping the environment by cycling there ? !:ReadIt:

It's the world's third largest supermarket group, with stores in 12 countries. More than 27 million people outside the UK have a Tesco Clubcard.

Overloaded Tesco car parks I see 5 days of the week across the country dont tell lies.
The 2000 surveyed is hardly comprehensive.
Like Moyes, the jury is still out on Mr Clarke.
Nobody is forced to shop at Tesco, in fact most if not all come voluntarily :xxgrinning--00xx3::REGamblMoney01HL1:

We also shop regularly at Morrisons since it's the nearest in our place (there's Lidl too but Keith doesn't want to shop there, only if we have not seen what we want in Morrisons, which is very rarely though). But what makes us shop at Morrisons most of the time is because our guinea pigs seem to prefer the fresh veggies there. We do sometimes shop at Asda and Tesco but the veggies most of the times get wasted because the guinea pigs would not eat them and end up spoiling! I always wonder why! :Erm: Plus Morrisons will always have portions of melons which I can't seem to get from Tesco and Asda. We prefer buying butter scones from Tesco though and go to Asda for small cans of Pepsi and Schweppes ginger ale and lemonade because it's usually cheaper there (per box).

Well, after living in this town since 1967, I've just had a look on google maps to see where my nearest Aldi store is.
Quite a long way away, BUT on the route of the FREE bus that stops outside my house. :Erm:
Also, just about within reasonable cycling distance.

Convenience is the watch word here. I'll be buggered if I'll drive out of my way at considerable expense to spite my nose. We are loyal to ourselves. We shop where we shop coz it suits us.
It just so happens Tesco stores are almost always handy wherever you are. This talk of saturation is absolutely nonsense. Also the talk of percentages is of equal rubbish. I'd rather pick up Tesco's supposed 66% profits than 100% of those 3rd division outfits.
I'm not knocking those little guys, we need them for competition :xxgrinning--00xx3:
Price comparisons? Rip off Tesco? How about the 'price promise' what's going on? If you felt you were getting a raw deal, the 'price promise' would of rectified it.

4 pints of milk is a classic Tesco ( & other big 4 supermarkets) rip off
See this link from November 2009 which shows them all (except Iceland who charged £1.00) flogging 4 pints for £1.53
http://metricviews.org.uk/2009/11/milk-pricing-is-there-method-in-the-supermarket-muddle/
In the 4 or 5 years since then the price eased to £1.39. When it suited them Tesco would sell their own spurious "Creamfields" brand at £1.00. Throughout all this time Aldi, Lidl and Iceland continued to sell 25% cheaper at £1.00, Asda dropped theirs to £1.00 a few months ago.
Lo and behold on 4 March 2014 Tesco, Sainsburys and the rest dropped their price to £1.00. The extra £0.39 was excess profit - how many million 4 pint bottles of milk do they sell a day ?
Tesco - every little rip off helps our bottom line

Don't understand why anyone goes to Tesco still nowadays, unless they've no choice. It's the most expensive supermarket and even Sainsburys is now cheaper (If you take into consideration their strange marketing habit of giving away coupons for your next shop)
It used to be the best place to go 15 or so years ago, but the prices have slowly crept up and now it's notably more expensive.
Add this to the fact the staff are miserable (If you know anyone working there personally, they'll tell you it's because morale is very low as they have been cut back and are overworked). Contrast this with Asda staff, most will tell you it's an ok or even good place to work, and there's a noticeable difference in their attitude, at least at the ones I've been to.
Another supermarket I better not name, there's apparently a bullying attitude with management as culture, and there's all sorts of stories about employees being treated very badly out there.
Then there's Aldi, cheaper to buy, quality often better than the big normal supermarkets, and jobs sought after - they pay decent wages (for a supermarket, nobody will get rich on them but for that field it's not bad).

Tomorrow being Sunday - and Easter Sunday at that - the youth of our church will, no doubt, have a role in the morning service. Now, as it happens, those youngsters (aged between 12 & 17) are members of what is known as 'The JAM Club' ... JAM in this context being short for 'Jesus And Me' ... and, of course, on Easter Sunday, the focus of Christians everywhere, is on Jesus' resurrection from the tomb and His ascension unto Heaven. :gost:
