The range of premium smartphones available is bewilderingly wide. Should you choose Apple or Android? Budget or budget-busting?
Here are some of the best around........

1. Samsung Galaxy S5

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9265132.ece/ALTERNATES/w1024/Samsung-Galaxy-S5.jpg

With a gloriously bright and colourful 5.1in screen, the S5 has significantly improved battery life. Features that impress include the fingerprint sensor under the home button to keep the phone secure and the fast 6MP camera.
£569.95, carphonewarehouse.com

2. Apple iPhone 5s

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9265136.ece/ALTERNATES/w1024/Apple-iPhone-5s.jpg

Though it was released in October, this is an impressive phone with good design and its 4in display is pin-sharp. The iPhone operating system is elegant and more intuitive than rivals. The camera is 8MP, not as high resolution as some, but the fastest on test. There’s a fingerprint sensor for extra security.
From £549, store.apple.com

3. Motorola Moto G

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9265138.ece/ALTERNATES/w1024/Motorola-Moto-G.jpg

If you’re upgrading to your first smart phone, this slick, good-value model is one to consider. It has a screen that’s bigger than the iPhone 5s at 4.5ins, and higher resolution.
£119.95, amazon.co.uk

4. HTC One (M8)

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9265137.ece/ALTERNATES/w1024/HTC-One-%28M8%29.jpg

This year’s model is slick and beautiful with an all-metal back. The camera has just 4MP resolution but the sensor is bigger and better at sucking in light and has two lenses to record extra data for further effects. We like the Android’s attractive and user-friendly software, particularly the gesture controls so you can answer a call just by picking it up.
£529.95, carphonewarehouse.com

5. Sony Xperia Z2

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9265133.ece/ALTERNATES/w1024/Sony-Xperia-Z2.jpg

The new 5.2in-display Sony is solid, handsome and waterproof, so you can text in the bath. The camera is very strong – 20.7MP. The audio is also great thanks to special headphones with the phone that have digital noise-cancelling.
£599, shop.sonymobile.com (available for pre-order)

6. Nokia Lumia 1020

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9265140.ece/ALTERNATES/w1024/Nokia-Lumia-1020.jpg

This is one for photo aficionados. It has a 41MP sensor: the results are stunning. It uses the Windows Phone operating system. For us, the highlight is the fact that maps are available for free download, so you can use the phone as a satnav abroad with no data charges.
£479.99, shop.o2.co.uk

7. Apple iPhone 5c

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9265135.ece/ALTERNATES/w1024/Apple-iPhone-5c.jpg

Apple’s lower-priced handset has a glossy plastic case that looks and feels anything but cheap. The screen is the same as on the pricier 5s and the operatingsystem is identical. The main point of difference is it’s not quite as fast as on the 5s.
From £429, store.apple.com/uk

8. Yotaphone

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9265134.ece/ALTERNATES/w1024/yotaphone.jpg

Along with a regular 4.3in screen, the back of this phone is a display as well, a monochrome e-ink one, like on a Kindle e-reader. This screen uses no power except when the content changes so you can save data there and it’s safe even if you run out of juice.
£419, yotaphone.com

9. Motorola Moto X

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9265139.ece/ALTERNATES/w1024/Motorola-Moto-X.jpg

Uniquely, this phone responds when you say “Okay Google Now” even when it’s on standby. Then it’ll answer your spoken question. It has a good 4.7in screen and you can launch the 10MP camera by a flick of the wrist.
£319.95, phones4u.co.uk

10. Nokia Lumia 1520

http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9265141.ece/ALTERNATES/w1024/Nokia-Lumia-1520.jpg

This is a 6in-screen mobile making it ideal for e-book reading and web surfing. The display, like the Nokia Lumia 1020, is designed to be easy to read even in bright sunlight. You can wake the screen by tapping it and even use it with gloves on.
£352, amazon.co.uk

I thought some of those Chinese Huawei ones were supposed to be the biz and would get into a top ten. I think my next one will be last years Samsung...... not impressed with mega address book lags when composing emails and texts which I think is a common issue on HTC androids fur which the only cure seems to be reinstalling Android

I wish I hadn't bothered to get one of these expensive things on contract.

My tablet is just as good, much cheaper, costs nothing to run, and I have 3 PAYG mobiles already...and a landline. :doh

Thank goodness the contract on this crappy Nokia 610 finishes in November.

Ive improved the battery and gave it 32gb of memory. It's a great device...apparently this is what they are called now

Just got myself a free upgrade with EE.. Never paid for a mobile phone ever. So settled for a HTC one Mini. Could have got the HTC one M8 but didn't want to pay £29.99 plus an extra £12 a month on my contract.

HTC One (M8) :xxgrinning--00xx3: HTC one was phone of 2013

you get what you pay for , if you just want a make calls then buy the cheapest suitable phone, but if you play games, use it for sat nav etc then you'll need something more powerful

my misses has a Iphone 5s and OVERALL i don't think its as good as her old HTC Sensation XE :cwm24: never mind a HTC One or (m8) :xxparty-smiley-004:

If It werent for the time I spent away from home, I probably wouldnt bother with it.

My new home broadband provider 'talk talk' is charging me £13.50 per month for unlimited data on fibre. I paid for the line rental up front saving me £58 :xxgrinning--00xx3:...........I dont feel as guilty now shelling out on the expensive Vodafone con...'con' being the operative word :doh
