Unless your flying Wizz Air, who are more stringent then the others and you find it exceeds the size.

We recently travelled the 4 of us with 2 rollerboard cabin cases weighing 25kg each (full of books), plus a camera bag, two rucksacks and a guitar all in our hand carry... This as in addition to 8 suitcases checked in.
With two young children in tow, it was definitely a struggle.

Wife checked in with Cathay yesterday as it was a short notice trip she only had time to cobble together 23kg of the 30kg allowable checked baggage. They weighed her carry on and made her reduce it from 10kg to 7kg . I suppose as always some enforce regs more stringently than others and it doesn't help to have an old trout on the check in desk

I have noticed a number of airlines getting stricter with carry on luggage. However, they seem to pay a lot more attention to carry on suitcases than backpacks, probably as they know the former can carry a lot more bricks. :Erm:

Incidentally we were also flying Cathay, the only reason we were brazen is because we were up at the front, had we been in our normal seats I doubt we'd have been given the same leeway.
We always have a spare set of clothes in our hand carry, which was fortuitous as we due to weather in Hong Kong we ended up with a 24 hour stopover in the airport hotel.
